Miles Away (Winger Song)
"Miles Away" is a power ballad by American rock band Winger, from their album '' In the Heart of the Young''. Released in late 1990 to pop radio after already reaching number one in most AOR markets, the song peaked at #12 on the Hot 100. It is also significant for being Winger's only ever hit single in the United Kingdom, reaching #56 on January 24, 1991. The single featured a B-side, "All I Ever Wanted", that was never released on any other Winger albums or compilations, though it did appear, in demo form, on the ''Demo Anthology''. Background Originally written by Paul Taylor during the very early '80s, he offered this song to Eric Martin (later of Mr. Big) who declined even though he knew it would be a hit. Paul Taylor stated he wrote “Miles Away” for his girlfriend Emi Canyn who was one of the Nasty Habits, the background singers for Mötley Crüe. Winger is an American heavy metal band that has combined elements of glam metal and progressive metal. Formed in New York City, Winger gained popularity during the late 1980s and early 1990s. The band's two platinum albums, '' Winger'', and ''In the Heart of the Young'', along with charting singles "Seventeen", "Headed for a Heartbreak" and " Miles Away", put them on the top of the charts by the early 1990s. In 1990, the band was nominated for an American Music Award for "Best New Heavy Metal Band". As the music scene changed in the early to mid-1990s due to the popularity of grunge, their success faded following their third release, ''Pull''. Winger disbanded in 1994. Randy VanWarmer (also written as Vanwarmer, Van Warmer; March 30, 1955 – January 12, 2004) was an American singer-songwriter and guitarist. His biggest success was the pop hit, "Just When I Needed You Most". It reached No. 8 on the UK Singles Chart in September 1979 after peaking at No. 4 on the ''Billboard'' Hot 100 and No. 1 on ''Billboard'' Hot Adult Contemporary Tracks earlier that year. He wrote several songs for the group The Oak Ridge Boys including the No. 1 U.S. Country hit "I Guess It Never Hurts to Hurt Sometimes". The song appeared on his 1981 album ''Beat of Love'', which also included the pop tune "Suzi Found a Weapon", which hit No. 55 on the ''Billboard'' Hot 100. "Just When I Needed You Most" is the title of a 1979 hit single by the American singer-songwriter Randy VanWarmer. Background VanWarmer was inspired to write "Just When I Needed You Most" by two events: his old car, that he loved and used for years, broke down on his way to work in Denver, Colorado, and he experienced a "devastating" breakup with a girlfriend. He wrote the song six months after that breakup, co-writing it with Tony Wilson of the group Hot Chocolate''The Item'', August 14, 1988, p. 41 two years before it became a hit. Eric Lee Martin (born October 10, 1960, in Long Island, New York) is an American rock singer and musician who was active throughout the 1980s, 1990s, and 2000s, both as a solo artist and as a member of various bands. He earned his most prominent success as the frontman for the hard rock band Mr. Big, which scored a big hit in the early 1990s with "To Be with You", a song that Martin wrote during his teen years. ''In the Heart of the Young'' (also known as ''Winger II'') is the second studio album by the American rock band Winger. It was released by Atlantic Records in 1990. Beau Hill produced the album. Although coming out at the decline of the glam metal scene in the U.S., the release was a commercial success, prompting additional touring by the group. The album was certified platinum and produced such hits as " Can't Get Enuff", " Easy Come Easy Go" and " Miles Away", the latter reaching the Top 20 in the Billboard's single chart. According to Kip Winger, " Can't Get Enuff" and " Easy Come Easy Go" were late additions to the track listing, written because it was felt there were not enough rock songs on the album. The album itself peaked at #15 at the album chart.
