Milan Gaľa
Milan Gaľa (21 January 1953 in Jarovnice – 1 June 2012 near Košice) was a Slovak politician and Member of the European Parliament (MEP) with the Slovenská demokraticka a krestanska unia, part of the European People's Party and sat on the European Parliament's Committee on Culture and Education. He was a substitute for the Committee on Development and the Committee on the Environment, Public Health and Food Safety. He was also a member of the Delegation for relations with the Gulf States and Yemen. Jarovnice
Jarovnice (german: Jarownitz; hu, Jernye) is a village and municipality in Sabinov District in the Prešov Region of north-eastern Slovakia. History In historical records, the village was first mentioned in 1260. Geography and demography The municipality lies at an altitude of 441 meters and covers an area of 20.170 km². It has a population of 7,241 people. Jarovnice houses the largest community of Romani people in Slovakia. 1998 Flood Heavy rains on July 20 of 1998 brought about the worst floods in Slovak history, changing otherwise quiet rivers in eastern Slovakia into a lethal force. The wild, overflowing water rushed from the river bed, sweeping over and engulfing everything in its path. The tragic results of these destructive floods were 63 dead, over 3,000 people evacuated from their homes, and two thousand houses destroyed in dozens of communities. Lipany
Lipany ('lindens;' hu, Héthárs, german: Siebenlinden, la, Septemtiliae all lit. 'seven lindens') is a town in the Sabinov District, Prešov Region in northeastern Slovakia. History The first written mention about Lipany comes from 1312. It gained town privileges in the 16th century. Geography Lipany lies at an altitude of above sea level and covers an area of . The Torysa River flows through the town. It is away from Sabinov, from Prešov and from Stará Ľubovňa. Demographics According to the 2001 census, the town had 6,130 inhabitants. 91.17% of inhabitants were Slovaks, 7.37% Roma, 0.33% Czechs, 0.31% Ukrainians and 0.28% Rusyns. In many countries, a mayor is the highest-ranking official in a municipal government such as that of a city or a town. The Slovak Democratic and Christian Union – Democratic Party ( sk, Slovenská demokratická a kresťanská únia – Demokratická strana, SDKÚ-DS) was a liberal-conservative, Christian-democratic political party in Slovakia. The SDKÚ-DS was a member of the Centrist Democrat International and was a member of the European People's Party until 2018, when it was expelled. SDKÚ was a major right-wing conservative party in Slovakia for 12 years. During their governance, Slovakia became member of European Union and North Atlantic Treaty Organization. SDKÚ-DS was marginalized after the 2012 parliamentary election, when it received only 6% of votes. Christian Democratic Movement
The Christian Democratic Movement ( sk, Kresťanskodemokratické hnutie, KDH) is a Christian-democratic political party in Slovakia that is a member of the European People's Party (EPP) and an observer of the Centrist Democrat International. History The party was established in 1990. In the 1990s it was led by Ján Čarnogurský and then since 2000 by Pavol Hrušovský. Before the 2016 elections, it was led by Ján Figeľ. Following the defeat in the elections, Figeľ stepped down from the position and Pavol Zajac became temporary leader until the decisive party meeting on 19 March 2016. Figeľ endorsed Milan Majerský, mayor of Levoča, for the position. The KDH was a member of the government coalition, but it left that coalition on 7 February 2006 due to disputes over an international treaty between Slovakia and the Holy See dealing with the Conscientious objection on religious grounds.
