Mike McKay (politician)
Michael Wayne McKay (born March 5, 1969, in Rockville, Maryland) is a Republican member of the Maryland Senate representing District 1, which covers parts of Garrett, Allegany, and Washington counties. He was previously the state-delegate for District 1C. Early life and career McKay was born on March 5, 1969, in Rockville, Maryland. He manages a dry cleaning business, which has four locations in Maryland and West Virginia. From 2010 to 2014 served as president of the Allegany County Board of County Commissioners and the Cumberland Area Metropolitan Planning Organization. He also served as a member of the Allegany County Board of Education and various other county-level boards. In June 2013, McKay announced his candidacy for the Maryland House of Delegates, seeking to succeed Delegate LeRoy Myers, who previously announced plans to retire. Maryland's Legislative District 1 is one of 47 districts in the state for the Maryland General Assembly. It covers Allegany County, Garrett County and part of Washington County. The district is divided into three sub-districts for the Maryland House of Delegates: District 1A, District 1B and District 1C. Demographic characteristics As of the 2020 United States census, the district had a population of 115,613, of whom 94,137 (81.4%) were of voting age. The racial makeup of the district was 102,833 (88.9%) White, 6,001 (5.2%) African American, 214 (0.2%) Native American, 1,041 (0.9%) Asian, 23 (0.0%) Pacific Islander, 812 (0.7%) from some other race, and 4,673 (4.0%) from two or more races. 2018 Maryland House Of Delegates Election
The 2018 Maryland House of Delegates elections were held on November 6, 2018, as part of the biennial United States elections. All 141 of Maryland's state delegates were up for reelection. Prior to the election, there was little doubt that Democrats would hold their majority in the chamber. Maryland's House of Delegates has had a Democratic majority since the elections of 1920, and it remains a solidly Democratic in elections at both the national and state level. Still, there was some discussion about whether or not Republicans would be able to make inroads in the chamber, especially considering that popular incumbent Governor Larry Hogan was running for reelection at the top of the ticket simultaneously.
