It is a tributary of the Saint Louis River and flows northeast to southwest. The Midway River rises in the central part of Hermantown, then flows through Midway Township and Thomson Township, before flowing into the Saint Louis River southeast of Cloquet. Midway River was named from the fact it lies at the midpoint between Fond du Lac and a series of falls on the St. Louis River. Carlton County is a county in the State of Minnesota, formed in 1857. As of the 2020 census, the population was 36,207. Its county seat is Carlton. Part of the Fond du Lac Indian Reservation lies in northeastern Carlton County. Carlton County is part of the Duluth, MN- WI Metropolitan Statistical Area. Hermantown, Minnesota
Hermantown is a city in Saint Louis County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 10,221 at the 2020 census. A suburb of Duluth, it was at one point the only city in the county to grow in population, as much of the area's residential and commercial expansion occurred there. Hermantown is near the tip of Lake Superior. The eastern part of Hermantown has an appearance typical of a lower-density bedroom community, with large, leafy lots and occasional subdivisions. The car-oriented " Miller Hill area", or Miller Trunk Corridor of Duluth, has sprawled well past the city boundary line into this part of Hermantown. Thomson Township is a township in Carlton County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 5,003 as of the 2010 census. Thomson Township took its name from the city of Thomson. Interstate 35 and Carlton County Road 61 are two of the main routes in the township. The community of Esko is located within Thomson Township. Cloquet, Minnesota
Cloquet ( ) is a city in Carlton County, Minnesota, United States, at the junction of Interstate 35 and Minnesota State Highway 33. Part of the city lies within the Fond du Lac Indian Reservation and serves as one of the reservation's three administrative centers. The population was 12,568 at the 2020 census. History Cloquet began as a group of small settlements around three sawmills: Shaw Town, Nelson Town, and Johnson Town. These became known as Knife Falls after a local waterfall over sharp slate rocks, and later as Cloquet. The Ojibwe in the area called the area ''Mookomaan-onigamiing'', meaning "At the Knife Portage", as the portage to avoid Knife Falls connected the three communities.
