Middle-earth Role Playing
''Middle-earth Role Playing'' (MERP) is a 1984 role-playing game based on J. R. R. Tolkien ''The Lord of the Rings'' and ''The Hobbit'' under license from Tolkien Enterprises. Iron Crown Enterprises (I.C.E.) published the game until they lost the license on 22 September 1999. System The rules system of the game is a streamlined version of I.C.E.'s generic fantasy RPG, ''Rolemaster''. Characters have Attributes and Skills rated between 1 and 100 on a percentile die (d100) or two ten-sided dice (2d10). Skills can be modified to a rating above or below these limits (i.e. under 1 or over 100, with open-ended MERP options to add or subtract additional d100). An attack roll consists of a percentile roll, to which the attacker's skill rating and appropriate attribute rating are added and the defender's dodge rating is subtracted. Coleman Charlton
S. Coleman Charlton was one of the founders of Iron Crown Enterprises (ICE). Career While running a six-year ''Dungeons & Dragons'' campaign set in Middle-earth, Pete Fenlon began developing a set of house rules with Charlton and Kurt Fischer, ultimately forming Iron Crown Enterprises in 1980 to publish their set of rules. Charlton was one of the designers of the ''Rolemaster'' role-playing game system in 1980. In 1984 he simplified the ''Rolemaster'' set of rules in order to create '' MERP'', the first Middle-earth role-playing game, also edited by ICE. Charlton designed the ''Middle-earth Collectible Card Game'', which was published in 1995, after ICE recovered the licensing rights that they had previously signed over to Wizards of the Coast. ''The One Ring Roleplaying Game'' is a tabletop role-playing game set in J. R. R. Tolkien's Middle-earth, set at the time between ''The Hobbit'' and ''The Lord of the Rings''. Designed by Francesco Nepitello and Marco Maggi, the game was initially published by Cubicle 7 in 2011 under the title ''The One Ring: Adventures over the Edge of the Wild''. Merpcon
Tolkienmoot is an annual convention run by The Tolkien Society, the Eä Tolkien Society, created for scholars, gamers, and enthusiasts of the works of J.R.R. Tolkien. It began under the name of Merpcon (for "Middle-Earth Role Playing Conference") in 2005. Always a convention focused on J.R.R. Tolkien scholarly discussion and gaming in Middle-earth, its name was changed in 2009 as the venue expanded. The convention was founded by Hawke Robinson and others. Tolkienmoot includes scholarly discussions and guest speakers, but also provides an emphasis on role-playing games. It is typically held annually on the third weekend of July in Spokane, Washington, typically for 1 to 5 days. The convention is open and free to the public.
