Mickey's Movies
''Mickey's Movies'' is a 1928 silent short film in Larry Darmour's '' Mickey McGuire'' series starring a young Mickey Rooney. Directed by Albert Herman, the two-reel short was released to theaters on September 2, 1928 by FBO. Plot Excitement arrives in the town of Toonerville, when a movie is being shot on location in front of the Scorpion's clubhouse. After kicking the film crew off of the property, Mickey and his Gang make their own movie with the aid of a 'scenario' that Mickey recently wrote. Notes *In this film, the principal kids are aided by a new character, "Little Chocolate" (played by child actress Hannah Washington). This may have been this character's only appearance in the series. Earl Montgomery
Earl Triplett Montgomery (May 24, 1894 – October 28, 1966) was a film director, writer, and comedian who performed in silent films including as the character Hairbreadth Harry. He established the producing company Earl Montgomery Comedy Company. Joe Rock partnered with him at Vitagraph. Montgomery was born in Santa Cruz, California. He was a theater actor. Early in his film career he was a stunt man with American Film Company. Albert Herman
Albert Herman (1887–1958) was an American actor, screenwriter and film director. Herman was a prolific director, working mainly on low-budget movies for companies such as Producers Releasing Corporation. He is sometimes credited as Al Herman. Hannah Washington
Hannah Washington was a former child actor who was active in Hollywood during the 1920s and 1930s. A fixture in short comedies — often as a character named Oatmeal — she was one of the few Black child actors in movies at the time. She also had roles in 1933's ''King Kong'' and 1935's ''The Littlest Rebel'', where she appeared alongside Shirley Temple. Biography Hannah was born in Los Angeles, California, to Robert Washington and Fannie Ford; her aunt was actress and dancer Mildred Washington. Her first known on-screen appearance was in 1926's ''Sea Horses''; her parents were also extras on several of her older films. She was signed as a toddler by Sunset Studios in 1927 to a contract to appear in comedies. She appears to have returned from acting around 1935; she later married and had a son. ''Mickey McGuire'' is an American comedy series of short subjects from 1927 to 1934. Produced by Larry Darmour, the series was notable for essentially launching the careers of Mickey Rooney and Billy Barty. The series was based on Fontaine Fox's popular comic strip series, Toonerville Trolley. In 1925 Fox placed a newspaper ad for a dark-haired child to play the role of "Mickey McGuire" in a series of short films. This ad attracted the attention of Mrs Nell Yule, the recently separated wife of vaudevillian Joseph Yule, who believed her son Joseph "Joe" Yule, Jr. (later known as Mickey Rooney) was right for the part.
