Mick McCarthy (footballer, Born 1911)
Mick McCarthy (22 December 1911 – 21 May 1973) was an Ireland international footballer who played as a goalkeeper. He spent the majority of his career playing in the League of Ireland for Shamrock Rovers, helping the club win three league titles and three FAI Cups. Playing career Club career McCarthy originally came from Blackrock, Cork and as a youth he played hurling as well as association football. He played for Cork Bohemians and Fordsons before signing for Shamrock Rovers on 6 November 1931. A number of Scottish clubs, as well as Birmingham City, made enquiries about signing him before he opted to join Rovers. In 1931–32 he was part of Rovers team that won the treble, winning the League of Ireland, the FAI Cup and the League of Ireland Shield. In many team sports which involve scoring goals, the goalkeeper (sometimes termed goaltender, netminder, GK, goalie or keeper) is a designated player charged with directly preventing the opposing team from scoring by blocking or intercepting opposing shots on goal. 1931–32 FAI Cup
The FAI Cup 1931/32 was the eleventh edition of Ireland's premier cup competition, The Football Association of Ireland Challenge Cup or FAI Cup. The tournament began on 27 December 1931 and concluded on 17 April 1932 with the final held at Dalymount Park, Dublin. Irish League XI
The Irish League representative team was the representative side of the Irish Football League, the national league for football in Northern Ireland from 1922 and, prior to that the league for Ireland. The Irish League was suspended from 1941–42 to 1946–47 due to the Second World War. Olympic Stadium (Amsterdam)
The Olympic Stadium (Dutch: ''Olympisch Stadion'', ) is a sporting venue which was used as the main stadium for the 1928 Summer Olympics in Amsterdam. The venue is currently used mostly for athletics, other sports events and concerts. When completed, the stadium had a capacity of 31,600. Following the completion of the rival De Kuip stadium in Rotterdam in 1937, the Amsterdam authorities increased the capacity of the Olympic Stadium to 64,000 by adding a second ring to the stadium. In 1987 the stadium was listed as a national monument. AFC Ajax used the Olympic Stadium for international games until 1996, when the Amsterdam Arena, since 2018 renamed Johan Cruyff Arena, was completed. Renovation started in 1996, and the stadium was refurbished into the original construction of 1928. Bradford City A
Bradford is a city and the administrative centre of the City of Bradford district in West Yorkshire, England. The city is in the Pennines' eastern foothills on the banks of the Bradford Beck. William Glen (footballer)
William Glen (18 July 1903 – 29 May 1981) was an Irish footballer. He joined Shamrock Rovers in their maiden season in League of Ireland football in 1922 and went on to spend fifteen years at Glenmalure Park winning everything the domestic game had to offer. Sacky played in the official opening of the Milltown ground on the 19 September 1926 against Belfast Celtic F.C. He played in a record ten FAI Cup finals plus four replays. His first was in 1922 when Rovers lost to St James's Gate F.C. and his last was in the 1939 final replay when he scored the only goal for Shelbourne against Sligo Rovers. Along with Johnny Fullam he shares the record for most winners' medals. David Byrne (footballer, Born 1905)
David Byrne (28 April 1905 – 1 May 1990) was an Irish former footballer who played as a forward. Nicknamed Babby as he was the youngest of 11 and born in Dublin, he joined Shamrock Rovers in 1926 and had four spells at Glenmalure Park. He also played for Bradford City, Shelbourne, Sheffield United, Manchester United, Coleraine, Glentoran and Larne. Byrne won three senior caps for the Irish Free State making a scoring debut as a Shels player on 20 April 1929 in a 4–0 friendly win against Belgium at Dalymount Park. As a Rovers player he played against Spain at the same venue on 13 December 1931. His last cap was as a Coleraine player in a World Cup qualifier against Belgium, also at Dalymount, on 25 February 1934. Owen Kinsella was an Irish footballer who played as a half back. He joined Shamrock Rovers in 1930 from Fordsons. He left for St James's Gate F.C. in 1938 and in 1939 moved to Limerick F.C.br> Kinsella earned two international caps for the Irish Free State national football team, Irish Free State making his debut on 8 May 1932 in a 2–0 friendly win over the Netherlands in the Olympic Stadium (Amsterdam). Paddy Moore
Paddy Moore (4 August 1909 – 24 July 1951) was an Irish professional footballer who played for, among others, Shamrock Rovers and Aberdeen. Moore was a dual internationalist and played for both Ireland teams – the FAI XI and the IFA XI. In February 1934 Moore scored four goals for the FAI XI in a World Cup qualifier against Belgium. As a result, he became the first player ever to score four goals in a World Cup game. However injury and alcoholism combined to blight both his career and life and he was only 41 when he died. In September 2006 Moore was posthumously honoured by Shamrock Rovers at their Legends Ball.
