The Michigan Wolverines swimming and diving program has both a men's and women's team. The University of Michigan swimming program is one of the most highly respected college swimming programs in the country. Big Ten Conference
The Big Ten Conference (stylized B1G, formerly the Western Conference and the Big Nine Conference) is the oldest Division I collegiate athletic conference in the United States. Founded as the Intercollegiate Conference of Faculty Representatives in 1896, it predates the founding of its regulating organization, the NCAA. It is based in the Chicago area in Rosemont, Illinois. For many decades the conference consisted of 10 universities, and it has 14 members and 2 affiliate institutions. John Davies (swimmer)
John Griffith Davies (17 May 1929 – 24 March 2020) was an Australian-American swimmer and United States federal judge. As a breaststroke swimmer of the 1940s and 1950s, he won a gold medal in the 200-metre breaststroke at the 1952 Summer Olympics in Helsinki, set a world record in the 200 yard breaststroke (short course)Cedar Rapids Gazette 29 March 1952 Page 4 and tied the world record in the 200 m breaststroke (long course). Peter William Vanderkaay (born February 12, 1984) is an American former competition swimmer who specialized in middle-distance freestyle events and is a four-time Olympic medalist. He was a member of the United States Olympic team in 2004, 2008, and 2012, and won bronze medals in the 200-meter freestyle at the 2008 Summer Olympics and the 400-meter freestyle at the 2012 Summer Olympics. Personal life Vanderkaay was born in Royal Oak, Michigan. He grew up in Oakland Township, and attended Rochester Adams High School in Rochester Hills. Alex Vanderkaay (born June 21, 1986) is an American competition swimmer. At the 2007 World University Games, Vanderkaay won the silver medal in the 400-meter individual medley (IM). Chris Thompson (swimmer)
Christopher Lee Thompson (born November 30, 1978) is an American former competition swimmer who won the bronze medal at the 2000 Summer Olympics in the men's 1,500-meter freestyle. He was the second American swimmer to break the 15-minute mark in the 1,500-meter freestyle, and held the American record for four years. He attended the University of Michigan, where he was a member of the Michigan Wolverines swimming and diving team from 1997 to 2001. Both at Michigan and as a post-graduate, Chris swam under coach Jon Urbanchek from 1997 to 2004. He held the NCAA and American records in the 1,650-yard freestyle for eleven years. Davis Tarwater
Davis Edward Tarwater (born March 24, 1984) is an American swimmer and Olympic gold medalist. He grew up in Knoxville, Tennessee and began competitive swimming at age seven. During high school, he set three state swimming records and led Webb School of Knoxville to the state title. In 2002, he was named High School Swimmer of the Year. Tarwater attended the University of Michigan, earning a bachelor's degree in political science, and St. Antony's College, Oxford earning a master's degree in Latin American Studies. At Michigan, he shifted his focus from the freestyle to the butterfly. He was a three-time NCAA national champion and thirteen-time All-American. Carl Robie
Carl Joseph Robie III (May 12, 1945 – November 29, 2011) was an American swimmer, Olympic champion, and former world record-holder. Biography At the 1964 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, Japan, Robie received a silver medal for his second-place finish in the men's 200-meter butterfly. Four years later at the 1968 Summer Olympics in Mexico City, he won a gold medal for winning the men's 200-meter butterfly. Robie broke the world record in men's 200-meter butterfly four times during his career, including twice on the same day in August 1962. Robie practiced civil trial law in Sarasota, Florida. He was inducted in the International Swimming Hall of Fame as an "Honor Swimmer" in 1976. Death Robie died at the age of 66 on November 29, 2011. Owen Von Richter (born April 7, 1975) is a Canadian former competitive swimmer who swam in the mixed-stroke medley events in international championships. Von Richter represented Canada at the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney, Australia, where he placed 29th in the men's 400-metre individual medley event, clocking 4:25.70 in the preliminary heats. He previously won a pair of bronze medals in the 200- and 400-metre individual medley events at the 1999 Pan American Games in Winnipeg. Andrew Robert Potts (born December 28, 1976) is a triathlete from the United States. He competed in triathlon at the 2004 Summer Olympics and is the 2007 Ironman 70.3 World Champion. Prior to triathlon, Potts was a swimmer where he won the bronze medal in the men's 400m individual medley at the 1995 Summer Universiade and earned a spot on the USA Swimming national team where he would place fourth at the 1996 Olympic Trials in the 400 IM. Eric John Namesnik (August 7, 1970 – January 11, 2006), nicknamed "Snik," was an American competition swimmer and two-time Olympic silver medalist in the men's 400-meter individual relay (1992 & 1996).
