The Michigan Department of State is administered by the Secretary of State, who is elected on a partisan ballot for a term of four years in gubernatorial elections. The Secretary of State is the third-highest official in the State of Michigan. As the name implies, the officeholder was originally responsible for much of state government, but now the duties are similar to those of the other 46 secretaries of states across the United States. If the Governor and Lieutenant Governor are both absent from the state, or the offices are concurrently vacant for some other reason, the secretary of state serves as acting governor. In Michigan, the Secretary of State is not only responsible for elections, but also oversees vehicle registration and the licensing of automobile drivers, similar to a motor vehicles regulator in other states. Randolph Manning
Randolph Manning (May 19, 1804 – August 31, 1864) was an American jurist and politician. He served as Michigan Secretary of State (1838-1840) and Chancellor of the Michigan Court of Chancery (1842-1846). Biography Born in Plainfield, New Jersey, Manning studied law in New York. In 1832, he moved to Pontiac, Michigan Territory and practiced law. In 1837, Manning was elected to the Michigan State Senate. He was appointed Michigan Secretary of State in 1838 and served until 1840. Manning was a Democrat until 1854, when he became a Republican because of his opposition to slavery. George Washington Peck
George Washington Peck (June 4, 1818 – June 30, 1905) was a United States representative from the state of Michigan. Biography Peck was born in New York City and pursued classical studies, attending Yale College and studying law in New York City. He moved to Michigan in 1839 and settled in Brighton, where he was admitted to the bar in 1842 and commenced practice there in the same year. He was a member of the Michigan State House of Representatives in 1846 and 1847 and served as speaker the last term. He moved to Lansing, when the state capital was located there in 1847. He was the first postmaster of Lansing and was Michigan Secretary of State from 1848 to 1849. He was editor and proprietor of the '' Lansing Journal'' and the state printer 1852-1855.
