Michele Mastellari was an Italian people, Italian painter of quadratura, active during the mid-19th century in Bologna. He often worked with his brother, Francesco (born 1830). He painted in tempera, for the Teatro Contavalli and the Teatro Comunale of Bologna. He painted the ceiling of the church of San Benedetto, Bologna, San Benedetto, the Chiesa degli Angeli, San Sigismondo, the presbytery of the church of Santa Maria del Soccorso; the main chapel of Santa Maria Maggiore, Bologna, Santa Maria Maggiore, and the cupola and transept of San Procolo, Bologna, San Procolo. Teatro Contavalli
The Teatro Contavalli was an opera house and theatre located at Via Mentana #2, in Bologna, region of Emilia-Romagna, Italy. Long since utilized as a theater, the site is now occupied by offices for the ''Centro Italiano di Documentazione sulla Cooperazione e L' Economia Sociale''. History The theater was inaugurated on 3 October 1814, under the patronage of doctor and entrepreneur, Antonio Contavalli, in a lot that once formed part of the Carmelite convent affiliated with the church of San Martino, Bologna, San Martino. The engineer was Giovanni Battista Martinetti and the architect was Giuseppe Nadi. The entrance was the stairwell entrance to the monastery, but the three-story newly built hall, seating up to 800 attendees, and the theater curtain were decorated with paintings by Antonio Basoli. The Teatro Comunale di Bologna is an opera house in Bologna, Italy. Typically, it presents eight operas with six performances during its November to April season. While there had been various theatres presenting opera in Bologna since the early 17th century, they had either fallen into disuse or burnt down. However, from the early 18th century, the ''Teatro Marsigli-Rossi'' had been presenting operatic works by popular composers of the day including Vivaldi, Gluck, and Niccolò Piccinni. The ''Teatro Malvezzi'', built in 1651, burned down in February 1745 and this event prompted the construction of a new public theatre, the ''Nuovo Teatro Pubblico'', as the Teatro Comunale was first called when it opened on 14 May 1763. San Benedetto, Bologna
San Benedetto is a Roman Catholic church in central Bologna. Founded in the 12th century, the church now has facade (1606) designed by Giovanni Battista Ballerini. Santa Maria Maggiore is a former Collegiate, Roman Catholic church, located on Via Galliera #10 in central Bologna, Italy. It is a house over from the Palazzo Aldrovandi. San Procolo, Bologna
San Procolo is an early Gothic-style, Roman Catholic church and former monastery-hospital located on Via Massimo D'Azeglio #52 in central Bologna, region of Emilia Romagna, Italy. History The church was erected by Benedictine Monks from the Abbey of Monte Cassino by 1087. It was dedicated to the martyred soldier Proculus of Bologna. The church and adjacent monastery remained under Benedictine rule, until 1796, when Napoleon suppressed the Benedictine order in Bologna. The Benedictine order, in addition to its contemplative activities, maintained a hostel for pilgrims.
