Michele Hutchison
Michele Hutchison (born 1972) is a British writer and translator, mainly of Dutch-language literature. She won the 2020 International Booker Prize for her translation of ''The Discomfort of Evening'' by Marieke Lucas Rijneveld, which according to the Booker website her "striking translation captures in all its wild, violent beauty." She was also awarded the Vondel Prize 2019 for her translation of ''Stage Four'' by Sander Kollaard. Biography Hutchison was born in the United Kingdom and educated at the University of East Anglia, University of Cambridge, and University of Lyon. A former commissioning editor at various publishing houses, she has translated more than twenty books from Dutch and one from French. Her translations include poetry, graphic novels, children’s books, short stories, literary non-fiction and novels by Marieke Lucas Rijneveld, Ilja Leonard Pfeijffer, Esther Gerritsen, Sander Kollaard, Pierre Bayard, and Sasja Janssen. Dutch-language Literature
Dutch language literature () comprises all writings of literary merit written through the ages in the Dutch language, a language which currently has around 23 million native speakers. Dutch-language literature is the product of the Netherlands, Belgium, Suriname, the Netherlands Antilles and of formerly Dutch-speaking regions, such as French Flanders, South Africa, and Indonesia. The Dutch East Indies, as Indonesia was called under Dutch colonization, spawned a separate subsection in Dutch-language literature. Conversely, Dutch-language literature sometimes was and is produced by people originally from abroad who came to live in Dutch-speaking regions, such as Anne Frank and Kader Abdolah. In its earliest stages, Dutch-language literature is defined as those pieces of literary merit written in one of the Dutch dialects of the Low Countries. Annejet Van Der Zijl
Annejet van der Zijl (born 6 April 1962) is a well-known and widely read writer in the Netherlands. So far, she has written seven non-fiction books and one fiction book, most of which have become bestsellers. Her work has been awarded the Gouden Ganzenveer (Golden Quill) and the Amsterdam Prize for the Arts. Biography Annejet was born into a family of teachers in Oterleek. After moving to Friesland, she received her high-school education at the Christelijk Gymnasium in Leeuwarden. Simone van der Vlugt (born 15 December 1966) is a Dutch writer, known there for her historical and young adult novels. She has also written for younger children, and adults. Several of her crime novels have been published in English. Biography Van der Vlugt (née Watertor) was born in Hoorn and started writing at an early age, submitting her first manuscript to a publisher at 13 years of age. Her first published novel (''The Amulet'', 1995, a historical novel about witch persecution, for children) was written while working as a secretary at a bank. She went on to write ten further historical novels for young adults. In 2004 Van der Vlugt wrote her first novel for adults, ''The Reunion'', a psychological suspense thriller. Joris Luyendijk (; born 30 December 1971) is a Dutch non-fiction author, anthropologist, news correspondent, and TV interviewer. International Booker Prize
The International Booker Prize (formerly known as the Man Booker International Prize) is an international literary award hosted in the United Kingdom. The introduction of the International Prize to complement the Man Booker Prize was announced in June 2004. Sponsored by the Man Group, from 2005 until 2015 the award was given every two years to a living author of any nationality for a body of work published in English or generally available in English translation. It rewarded one author's "continued creativity, development and overall contribution to fiction on the world stage", and was a recognition of the writer's body of work rather than any one title.
