Michael Mullen (Irish Politician)
Michael Mullen (1 February 1919 – 1 November 1982) was an Irish Labour Party (Ireland), Labour Party politician and trade union official. He was born 1 February 1919 in Church Street, Dublin, the son of John Mullen, a glassblower, and Martha Smith. He was educated at St Michan's school in Halston St., but left school at 14 to work in a butcher's after his father's death. At 16 he got a job in the Ever Ready battery factory in Portobello, where he joined the Irish Transport and General Workers' Union (ITGWU), and was elected a shop steward the following year. He was a member of the Irish Republican Army (1922–1969), Irish Republican Army during the 1940s, but left in 1945 to join the Labour Party. He was an unsuccessful candidate at the 1951 Irish general election, 1951 and 1957 Irish general election, 1957 general elections. Seanad Éireann
Seanad Éireann (, ; "Senate of Ireland") is the upper house of the Oireachtas (the Irish legislature), which also comprises the President of Ireland and Dáil Éireann (the lower house). It is commonly called the Seanad or Senate and its members senators (''seanadóirí'' in Irish, singular: ''seanadóir''). Unlike Dáil Éireann, it is not directly elected but consists of a mixture of members chosen by various methods. Its powers are much weaker than those of the Dáil and it can only delay laws with which it disagrees, rather than veto them outright. It can introduce new legislation. The 18th Dáil was elected at the 1965 general election on 7 April 1965 and met on 21 April 1965. The members of Dáil Éireann, the house of representatives of the Oireachtas (legislature) of Ireland, are known as TDs.
