Michael Howard (comedian)
Michael Howard (4 March 1916 – 18 February 1988) was a British actor and comedian. His parents were the Scottish Congregational minister, psychologist and academic John Grant McKenzie and Margaret Ann née Murray."Dr. J. G. McKenzie", ''The Times'' (London), 20 May 1963, p. 16. He trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art and performed at various theatres in Britain and America. He became a resident comic at the Windmill Theatre in London in 1941. He wrote and starred in a number of comedy shows for BBC Radio including ''For the Love of Mike'', ''Leave it to the Boys'', ''The Michael Howard Show'' and ''Here's Howard''. The last was adapted for BBC Television and was transmitted from 14 March to 20 June 1951. He married Betty Kelly in 1938, with whom he had one child, Harriet. They later divorced and in 1949 he married the actress Peggy Evans, with whom he had two children, Annabelle Howard and Ian Howard. Holywell Green is a village in Calderdale, West Yorkshire, England. The village is situated approximately south-west of Elland, south of Halifax and north-west of Huddersfield. Holywell Green is part of the Greetland and Stainland Ward of Calderdale Council. History Holywell Green was recorded in the ''Domesday book'' as being "a small hamlet within the township of Stainland." It gets its name from St Helen's Well which was known within the area during medieval times. The original location of this well is uncertain. Geography Holywell Green is the name given to the east side of Stainland. It is based around Stainland Road and Station Road, and built on an east-facing hill. ''A Canterbury Tale'' is a 1944 British film by Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger starring Eric Portman, Sheila Sim, Dennis Price and Sgt. John Sweet; Esmond Knight provided narration and played two small roles. For the post-war American release, Raymond Massey narrated and Kim Hunter was added to the film. The film was made in black and white, and was the first of two collaborations between Powell and Pressburger and cinematographer Erwin Hillier. Much of the film's visual style is a mixture of British realism and Hillier's German Expressionist style that is harnessed through a neo-romantic sense of the English landscape.
