Michael Curley (footballer)
Michael Curley (15 May 1912 – 1973) was an English footballer who played for Northwich Victoria, Manchester City, Port Vale, Colwyn Bay, and Macclesfield Town in the 1930s. Career Curley played for Northwich Victoria and Manchester City, before joining Port Vale in May 1935. He played 24 Second Division and three FA Cup games in the 1935–36 season, and scored one goal in a 2–1 victory over Charlton Athletic at The Old Recreation Ground on 16 September. The "Valiants" were relegated and Curley fell out of the first team picture, featuring in just three Third Division North games in the 1936–37 season. He transferred to Colwyn Bay in November 1936, and later moved on to Macclesfield Town but only featured in the opening two games of 1937–38 Cheshire County League season and after spending time in the reserves he returned to Northwich Victoria. The Old Recreation Ground
The Old Recreation Ground was a football stadium located in Hanley, Stoke-on-Trent, England, and home to Port Vale F.C. from 1913 to 1950. It was the sixth ground the club used. Structure and facilities The stadium was in rather bad condition, especially following years of neglect during World War II. The dressing rooms were bare, there were no toilet facilities throughout the entire ground, and racing pigeons were kept by '' The Sentinel'' and a number of supporters so as to relay the scoreline to different parts of the city. History Port Vale F.C. opened the ground in 1913, and six years later were admitted into the English Football League. The visit of Potteries derby rivals Stoke on 6 March 1920 saw a crowd of 22,697 turn up to see an away victory. The 1937–38 season was the 63rd season of competitive football (soccer), football in England. Overview Manchester City became the only team to have been relegated in the season after winning the league title as well as the only team to ever be relegated from the top tier of English football having scored the most goals in that particular season. Football League First Division
The Football League First Division was a division of the Football League in England from 1888 until 2004. It was the top division in the English football league system from the season 1888–89 until 1991–92, a century in which the First Division's winning club became English men's football champions. The First Division contained between 12 and 24 clubs, playing each other home and away in a double round robin. The competition was based on two points for a win from 1888 until the increase to three points for a win in 1981. Cheshire County League
The Cheshire County League was a football league founded in the north west of England in 1919, drawing its teams largely from Cheshire, surrounding English counties and North Wales. Initially the league was dominated by the reserve teams of Football League clubs, but as the Central League became established for these teams, the non-league clubs won every title after 1938. The outbreak of World War II in 1939 led to the league being split into Eastern and Western sections, with the winners of each playing for the overall championship in 1939–40, with the league then closing down for the duration of the combat until restarting in 1945. In 1968 the league lost several clubs to the newly formed Northern Premier League.
