Michael Bakan
Michael Bakan is a professor of ethnomusicology at Florida State University and director of the Balinese gamelan ensemble ''Sekaa Gong Hanuman Agung'' ("Gamelan Club of the Great Hanuman"). He wrote ''Music of Death and New Creation: Experiences in the World of Balinese Gamelan Beleganjur'', a book said to have "elevated gamelan beleganjur to the level of the much better known gong kebyar". Ethnomusicology
Ethnomusicology is the study of music from the cultural and social aspects of the people who make it. It encompasses distinct theoretical and methodical approaches that emphasize cultural, social, material, cognitive, biological, and other dimensions or contexts of musical behavior, in addition to the sound component. Within musical ethnography it is the first-hand personal study of musicking as known as the act of taking part in a musical performance. Folklorists, who began preserving and studying folklore music in Europe and the US in the 19th century, are considered the precursors of the field prior to the Second World War. Balinese Gamelan
Gamelan () ( jv, ꦒꦩꦼꦭꦤ꧀, su, ᮌᮙᮨᮜᮔ᮪, ban, ᬕᬫᭂᬮᬦ᭄) is the traditional ensemble music of the Javanese, Sundanese, and Balinese peoples of Indonesia, made up predominantly of percussive instruments. The most common instruments used are metallophones played by mallets and a set of hand-played drums called '' kendhang/Kendang'', which register the beat. The kemanak (a banana-shaped idiophone) and gangsa (another metallophone) are commonly used gamelan instruments in Bali. Hanuman
Hanuman (; sa, हनुमान, ), also called Anjaneya (), is a Hindu god and a divine '' vanara'' companion of the god Rama. Hanuman is one of the central characters of the Hindu epic ''Ramayana''. He is an ardent devotee of Rama and one of the Chiranjivis. Hanuman is regarded to be the son of the wind-god Vayu, who in several stories played a direct role in Hanuman's birth, and considered to be an incarnation or son of Shiva in Shaivism. Hanuman is mentioned in several other texts, such as the epic ''Mahabharata'' and the various Puranas. Evidence of devotional worship to Hanuman is largely absent in these texts, as well as in most archeological sites. Gamelan Beleganjur
''Gamelan beleganjur'' (also spelled ''balaganjur'') is one of the most popular styles of gamelan music in Bali. Its closest Western analogue is probably the Western military band. History Like the Western military band, the original purpose of ''beleganjur'' was to accompany armies into battle and strike fear into the hearts of the enemy. In fact, ''gamelan beleganjur'' literally means "gamelan of walking warriors". Also like its Western counterpart, today ''beleganjur'' has mostly lost its association with warfare, and instead is associated with festivals, contests, and cremation ceremonies. Although the origin of ''beleganjur'' is uncertain, it bears resemblance to the now rare '' gamelan gong bheri''. Joel Bakan
Joel Conrad Bakan (born 1959) is an American-Canadian writer, jazz musician, filmmaker, and professor at the Peter A. Allard School of Law at the University of British Columbia. Born in Lansing, Michigan, and raised for most of his childhood in East Lansing, Michigan, where his parents, Paul and Rita Bakan, were both long-time professors in psychology at Michigan State University. In 1971, he moved with his parents to Vancouver, British Columbia. He was educated at Simon Fraser University (BA, 1981), University of Oxford (BA in law, 1983), Dalhousie University (LLB, 1984) and Harvard University (LLM, 1986). He served as a law clerk to Chief Justice Brian Dickson in 1985. During his tenure as clerk, Dickson authored the judgment ''R v Oakes'', among others. Bakan then pursued a master's degree at Harvard Law School.
