Metropolitan Police Role In The News International Phone Hacking Scandal
This article provides a narrative beginning in 1999 of investigations by the Metropolitan Police Service (Met) of Greater London into the illegal acquisition of confidential information by agents in collaboration with the news media that is commonly referred to as the phone hacking scandal. The article discusses seven phases of investigations by the Met and several investigations of the Met itself, including critiques and responses regarding the Met's performance. Metropolitan Police Service
The Metropolitan Police Service (MPS), formerly and still commonly known as the Metropolitan Police (and informally as the Met Police, the Met, Scotland Yard, or the Yard), is the territorial police force responsible for law enforcement and the prevention of crime in Greater London. Martin Ingram
Martin Ingram is the pseudonym of ex-British Army soldier Ian Hurst, who served in the Intelligence Corps and Force Research Unit (FRU). He has made a number of allegations about the conduct of the British Army, its operations in Northern Ireland via the FRU, and against figures in the Provisional Irish Republican Army (IRA) and Sinn Féin. The Commissioner of Police of the Metropolis is the head of London's Metropolitan Police Service. Sir Mark Rowley was appointed to the post on 8 July 2022 after Dame Cressida Dick announced her resignation in February. Stocken (HM Prison)
HM Prison Stocken is a Category C men's prison located in the parish of Stretton, in the county of Rutland, England. Stocken is operated by His Majesty's Prison Service. History Built in 1985 as a Young Offenders Institution, HMP Stocken opened as a closed training prison. It has since expanded with new wings added in 1990, 1997, 1998 and 2019. In January 2003, an inspection report from Her Majesty's Chief Inspector of Prisons praised Stocken Prison, stating that it was an example for other jails to follow. Inspectors found "mutually respectful relationships between staff and prisoners" which created a "decent, safe and ordered environment." Glen Parva (HM Prison)
HM Prison Glen Parva was an adult male prison and Young Offenders Institution, located in Glen Parva, Leicestershire, England. Glen Parva was operated by His Majesty's Prison Service. The prison closed in June 2017, following an announcement at the end of 2016 that it would be replaced with a newly built category C adult prison. It has since been demolished and a new prison, HMP Fosse Way, is currently under construction on the site. It became an adult and young offenders institution in July 2011. Operation Motorman (ICO Investigation)
Operation Motorman was a 2003 investigation by the Information Commissioner's Office into allegations of offences under the Data Protection Act by the British press. The ICO first became aware of the scale of the problem in November 2002, when an ICO investigator attended a search under warrant of John Boyall, a private investigator in Surrey. Documents found on the premises revealed the misuse of data from the Police National Computer. This discovery led to two investigations: Operation Motorman, conducted by the ICO and led by ICO Senior Investigator Alec Owens, who prior to joining the ICO had been a Merseyside Police Inspector; and Operation Glade, conducted by the Metropolitan Police.
