Meta Torvalds
Elin Margareta "Meta" Torvalds (née Gyllenberg; 14 January 1922-10 February 2012) was a Finnish journalist. Biography Torvalds started as a journalist in 1946 at Österbottningen, and then she moved to Åbo Underrättelser in 1948. She worked at Åbo Underrättelser for almost 40 years, until 1985, and from 1971 to 1977, she was the editor-in-chief of the magazine. She often addressed ecclesiastical issues in her editorials and was a strong advocate of the female priesthood. Torvalds was awarded the Church Communication Prize for her work as a journalist in 1983. She was also inaugurated as an honorary doctor of Åbo Akademi University in 2002. Torvalds wrote the books ''Frisk Sydväst: med åboländsk ungdom genom 60 år'' (1957), Lämlar (1998), the 175-year history of Åbo Underrättelser, and ''Åboarna, hemstadsbok om det svenska Åbo'' (2002). Korsholm
Korsholm (; fi, Mustasaari) is a municipality of Finland. The town of Vaasa was founded in Korsholm parish in 1606 and today the municipality completely surrounds the city. It is a coastal, mostly rural municipality, consisting of a rural landscape and a large, fractured archipelago. The administrative center is Smedsby, situated from Vaasa center along Finnish national road 8. Geography It is located in the province of Western Finland and is part of the Ostrobothnia region. The municipality consists of the central areas, the southern plain, and the extensive archipelago. Parts of the archipelago belong to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Kvarken. One of Korsholm's more notable landmarks is that it holds Finland's longest bridge, the Replot Bridge. The bridge connects the island of Replot to the mainland. Turku
Turku ( ; ; sv, Åbo, ) is a city and former capital on the southwest coast of Finland at the mouth of the Aura River, in the region of Finland Proper (''Varsinais-Suomi'') and the former Turku and Pori Province (''Turun ja Porin lääni''; 1634–1997). The region was originally called Suomi (Finland), which later became the name for the whole country. As of 31 March 2021, the population of Turku was 194,244 making it the sixth largest city in Finland after Helsinki, Espoo, Tampere, Vantaa and Oulu. Ole Torvalds
Ole Torvalds (4 August 1916 – 8 February 1995) was a Finnish-Swedish journalist and poet. He was the father of journalist-politician Nils Torvalds and grandfather of software engineer Linus Torvalds famous for the Linux kernel. His full name was Ole Torvald Elis Saxberg, but he was also named Karanko after his step father, Toivo Karanko. His family belongs to the Swedish-speaking minority. In 1935 when he had moved to Helsinki for studies he changed his name to Torvalds. In 1944 he was awarded a literature prize from '' Svenska Dagbladet'' (shared with Harry Martinson, Lars Ahlin and Elly Jannes). In 1978 he received an honorary doctorate from Åbo Akademi. Åbo Akademi University
Åbo Akademi University ( sv, Åbo Akademi , ) is the only exclusively Swedish language multi-faculty university in Finland (or anywhere outside Sweden). It is located mainly in Turku (Åbo is the Swedish name of the city) but has also activities in Vaasa. Åbo Akademi should not be confused with the Royal Academy of Åbo, which was founded in 1640, but moved to Helsinki after the Turku fire of 1827 and is today known as the University of Helsinki. Åbo Akademi was founded by private donations in 1918 as the third university in Finland, both to let Turku again become a university town and because it was felt that the Swedish language was threatened at the University of Helsinki.
