Meskwaki Settlement School
Meskwaki Settlement School (MSS) is a tribally controlled school with oversight by the Bureau of Indian Education, is located in the Meskwaki Nation, also known as the Meskwaki Settlement. It is in unincorporated Tama County, Iowa, about west of Tama, and is a property of the Sac and Fox Tribe of the Mississippi in Iowa. History The Sac and Fox Settlement School was originally established as a Day School by the Bureau of Indian Affairs. The school then became part of the South Tama County Community School District, and then closed in 1972. After application by the tribal members to the Bureau of Indian Education, the school re-opened in 1980 as a tribally operated school. Tama is a city in Tama County, Iowa, United States. The population was 3,130 at the time of the 2020 census. Tama is situated two miles south of Toledo, the county seat. The two towns are close enough to have nearly grown together over the years. History Tama got its start in the year 1862, following construction of the Cedar Rapids and Missouri River Railroad through the territory. Tama is located a few miles from the Meskwaki Settlement, Iowa's only significant Native American community. Tama was located on the historic Lincoln Highway and is home to an original Lincoln Highway bridge, listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Iowa Star Conference
The Iowa Star Conference is a high school athletic conference in Central and Northeast Iowa. The conference comprises fifteen schools, split between north and south divisions within the conference. Current members North Division Future Division Member South Division Recent history North Tama County joined the Iowa Star in 2003, leaving the North Iowa Cedar League. Former member CAL (Coulter-Alexander-Latimer) last had their own high school in the 2017–18 school year. Meskwaki Settlement, Iowa
The Meskwaki Settlement is an unincorporated community in Tama County, Iowa, United States, west of Tama. It encompasses the reservation lands of the Meskwaki Nation (federally recognized as the Sac and Fox Tribe of the Mississippi in Iowa), one of three Sac and Fox tribes in the United States. The others are located in Oklahoma and Kansas. The settlement is located in the historic territory of the Meskwaki (Fox), an Algonquian people. Meskwaki people established the settlement in 1857 by privately repurchasing a small part of the land they had lost in the Sac and Fox treaty of 1842. Government The Nation operates a tribal school, tribal courts, public works department, and police force. Almost all of the district is in Tama County while a small portion is in Poweshiek County. The district serves, in addition to Tama, Chelsea, Montour, Toledo, and Vining. Meskwaki
The Meskwaki (sometimes spelled Mesquaki), also known by the European exonyms Fox Indians or the Fox, are a Native American people. They have been closely linked to the Sauk people of the same language family. In the Meskwaki language, the Meskwaki call themselves ', which means "the Red-Earths", related to their creation story. Historically their homelands were in the Great Lakes region. The tribe coalesced in the St. Lawrence River Valley in present-day Ontario, Canada. Under French colonial pressures, it migrated to the southern side of the Great Lakes to territory that much later was organized by European Americans as the states of Michigan, Wisconsin, Illinois, and Iowa.
