Mesilla Valley AVA
The Mesilla Valley AVA is an American Viticultural Area located primarily in the state of New Mexico with a small area in the state of Texas. Spanish explorer Don Juan de Oñate arrived in the area in 1598 and named a Native American village in the valley ''Trenquel de la Mesilla'', from which the valley as a whole became known as Mesilla Valley. Although viticulture began in nearby El Paso as early as 1650, grapes were first planted in the Mesilla Valley only in the early twentieth century, near the town of Doña Ana. An American Viticultural Area (AVA) is a designated wine grape-growing region in the United States, providing an official appellation for the mutual benefit of wineries and consumers. Winemakers frequently want their consumers to know about the geographic pedigree of their wines, as wines from a particular area can possess distinctive characteristics. Consumers often seek out wines from specific AVAs, and certain wines of particular pedigrees can claim premium prices and loyal customers. If a wine is labeled with an AVA, at least 85% of the grapes that make up the wine must have been grown in the AVA, and the wine must be fully finished within the state where the AVA is located. La Viña Winery
La Viña Winery is an American winery in La Union, New Mexico. It was established in 1977 and is the oldest continuously running winery in New Mexico. The winery was bought by Ken and Denise Stark in 1993. They moved the winery, originally located in southern New Mexico, to La Union, building a new winery but retaining the old name. The winery co-sponsored a grape-growing workshop with New Mexico State University's Cooperative Extension Service and Texas Cooperative Extension in September 2004. Doña Ana is a census-designated place (CDP) in Doña Ana County, New Mexico, United States. The population was 1,211 at the 2010 census. History Doña Ana is named for Doña Ana Robledo, who died there in 1680 while fleeing the Pueblo Revolt. Geography Doña Ana is located near the center of Doña Ana County at (32.390928, -106.815844). The Mesilla Valley is a geographic feature of Southern New Mexico and far West Texas. It was formed by repeated heavy spring floods of the Rio Grande.
