Mescalero Apache School
Mescalero Apache Schools (MAS), also known as Mescalero Apache School, is a tribal K-12 school in unincorporated Otero County, New Mexico, associated with the Bureau of Indian Education (BIE). It is of the Mescalero Apache tribe. It is outside of the Mescalero census-designated place although it has a Mescalero post office address. In 2011 it had about 500 students. History In 1954 the tribe asked for the school to be placed in the Otero County school system. By 2009 there was an epidemic of suicides among young people on the reservation. By September 2009, Mescalero Apache School established a suicide crisis center. The ''Albuquerque Journal'' is the largest newspaper in the U.S. state of New Mexico. History The ''Golden Gate'' newspaper was founded in June 1880. In the fall of 1880, the owner of the ''Golden Gate'' died and Journal Publishing Company was created. Journal Publishing changed the paper name to ''Albuquerque Daily Journal'' and issued its first edition of the ''Albuquerque Daily Journal'' on October 14, 1880. The ''Daily Journal'' was first published in Old Town Albuquerque, but in 1882 the publication moved to a single room in the so-called new town (or expanded Albuquerque) at Second and Silver streets near the railroad tracks. Apache Language
Southern Athabaskan (also Apachean) is a subfamily of Athabaskan languages spoken primarily in the Southwestern United States (including Arizona, New Mexico, Colorado, and Utah) with two outliers in Oklahoma and Texas. The language is spoken to a much lesser degree in the northern Mexican states of Sonora, Chihuahua, Durango, Coahuila, and Nuevo León. Those languages are spoken by various groups of Apache and Navajo peoples. Elsewhere, Athabaskan is spoken by many indigenous groups of peoples in Alaska, Canada, Oregon and northern California. Otero County, New Mexico
Otero County is a county located in the U.S. state of New Mexico. As of the 2010 census, the population was 63,797. Its county seat is Alamogordo. Its southern boundary is the Texas state line. It is named for Miguel Antonio Otero, the territorial governor when the county was created. Otero County includes the Alamogordo Micropolitan Statistical Area. ''Alamogordo Daily News'', founded in 1898, is a daily newspaper published in Alamogordo, New Mexico. It carries local news as well as syndicated content from Associated Press and others. History ''Alamogordo Daily News'' claims 1898 as its founding date, but a case can be made for 1896. A predecessor, the ''Chief'', was founded in Tularosa as a weekly in 1896, then moved to La Luz the next year and changed its name to ''Sacramento Chief''.
