Merrill Werts
Merrill H. Werts (November 17, 1922–September 22, 2011) was an American politician who served in the Kansas Senate as a United States Republican Party, Republican from the Kansas's 22nd Senate district, 22nd district from 1979 to 1989. Werts was born in Smith Center, Kansas and raised on a farm. He attended Kansas State University, but his education there was interrupted by service in World War II; Werts entered the U.S. Army in June 1943 and fought in the European theater, losing a leg in Germany. He left the Army in March 1946 and returned to KSU, graduating in 1947. He received a master's degree in agricultural economics from Cornell University in 1948. After completing his education, Werts worked in banking, eventually rising to become president of a bank in Junction City, Kansas. Donn Everett
Donn James Everett (April 29, 1929–November 29, 2007) was an American politician who served as a United States Republican Party, Republican in the Kansas State Senate and Kansas House of Representatives from 1969 to 1978. Everett was born in Emporia, Kansas. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Korean War; after returning to Kansas, he married Frederica Voiland in 1956 and worked as an attorney. The couple had six children before divorcing acrimoniously; the youngest child, Bridget Everett, became a noted comedian and cabaret performer. Everett's first forays into elected office were winning races for county attorney of Riley County, Kansas, Riley County and serving as a member of the city council in Manhattan, Kansas (including a stint as mayor). Kansas's 22nd Senate District
Kansas's 22nd Senate district is one of 40 districts in the Kansas Senate. It has been represented by Democrat Usha Reddi since 2023, succeeding fellow Democrat Tom Hawk. Geography District 22 is based in Manhattan, covering all of Clay and Riley Counties as well as a small part of northern Geary County. Other communities in the district include Clay Center, Ogden, Wakefield, Riley, and parts of western Junction City. Lana Oleen
Lana Scrimsher Oleen (born April 26, 1949) is an American politician and teacher. She served in the Kansas Senate as a Republican from the 22nd district from 1989 to 2005. Early life Oleen was born on April 26, 1949, in Kirksville, Missouri. She graduated from Topeka West High School and attended Emporia State University, where she received a bachelors of science in education in 1972 and a masters of science in 1977. She began teaching at Council Grove High School between 1972 and 1974, at Dover High School between 1975 and 1976 and at Leroy High School between 1976 and 1977. In 1978, she began teaching at St. George High School as an English, speech and drama teacher. She was a finalist for a National Endowment for the Humanities award in 1984 and received the Kansas Master Teachers award from Emporia State University Teachers College in 1985. The Kansas Senate is the upper house of the Kansas Legislature, the state legislature of the U.S. State of Kansas. It is composed of 40 senators elected from single-member districts, each with a population of at least 60,000 inhabitants. Members of the Senate are elected to a four-year term.
