Meriel Lucas
Emily Muriel Lucas also known as Meriel Lucas (1877-1962) was an English badminton player. Lucas from Devon Devon ( , historically known as Devonshire , ) is a ceremonial and non-metropolitan county in South West England. The most populous settlement in Devon is the city of Plymouth, followed by Devon's county town, the city of Exeter. Devo ... was capped by England on only seven occasions between 1902-1909 but won a remarkable 17 All England titles. Lucas played for the Teignmouth Badminton Club. Her parents were Sir Alfred William Lucas and Dame Florence Emma Casswell. After marrying George Adams in 1911 Lucas retired from competition. Teignmouth
Teignmouth ( ) is a seaside town, fishing port and civil parish in the English county of Devon. After seven years at the London Rifle Brigade's headquarters the Championships switched to a new venue at the Royal Horticultural Hall which provided five courts. The 1908 All England Open Badminton Championships was a badminton tournament held at the London Rifle Brigade HQ, Islington, London, England, from March 3 to March 7, 1908. Meriel Lucas won her fourth women's singles title and Henry Norman Marrett won his third men's singles title, the former reverted to a first to 11 points game format. Lucas also won her seventh women's doubles crown and second with G. L. Murray and she also won her first mixed doubles title partnering Norman Wood. In the men's doubles F. Warner was listed as playing, it is believed to be Frank Abbatt playing under his middle name. This started the unusual occurrence of other players playing under assumed names in future years. The reason for this happening or being allowed is unknown. The 1904 All England Championships was a badminton tournament held at the London Rifle Brigade Drill Hall in Islington, London, England from 16 to 19 March 1904. Henry Norman Marrett made a clean sweep of victories by winning the men's singles, men's doubles and mixed doubles. Ethel Thomson retained her women's singles title and teamed up again with Meriel Lucas to win the women's doubles. Lucas had missed the 1903 competition. The venue made six courts available and the event was extended to four days in order to include an England v Ireland international match. 1902 All England Badminton Championships
The 1902 All England Championships was a badminton tournament held at the Central Transept, The Crystal Palace in Sydenham, London, England, from 18–20 March 1902. Scoring in the singles went back to the first to 15 (for a game) following the previous year when it was 11. There were five rounds in the men's singles but the other events consisted of four rounds. The 1901 edition has been such a success that the Badminton Association put on extra events of a handicap nature. There were 47 entries for men and 49 for women and it was the first time that players from Scotland and Ireland entered. John Stokes & Thomas Good became the first non-English winners of an event although it was not considered one of the five 'Championship events'. However there were only 9 entries for the women's doubles.
