Mercedes, Uruguay
Mercedes () is the capital and largest city of the department of Soriano in Uruguay. According to the census 2011, it is the tenth most populated city of the country. Mercedes is an important centre of tourism, commerce and a commercial port. Its main industries are based on agriculture, dairy products, paper manufacturing and industrial activities. Its '' rambla'' (riverside promenade) is one of the widest in the country. Location The city is located on the junction of Route 2 with Route 14, and is situated on the south bank of the RÃo Negro. Also Route 21 from Colonia del Sacramento of Colonia Department terminates in this city. History Mercedes was founded in 1788 by the priest Manuel Antonio de Castro y Careaga with the name of ''Capilla Nueva de las Mercedes''. Uruguay consists of 19 departments (''departamentos''). Each department has a legislature called a Departmental Board. The ''Intendente'' is the department's chief executive. History The first division of the Republic into six departments occurred on 27 January 1816. In February of the same year, two more departments were formed, and in 1828 one more was added. When the First Constitution was signed in 1830, there were nine departments. These were the departments of Montevideo, Maldonado, Canelones, San José, Colonia, Soriano, Paysandú, Durazno and Cerro Largo. At that time, the department of Paysandú occupied all the territory north of the RÃo Negro, which included the current departments of Artigas, Rivera, Tacuarembó, Salto, Paysandú and RÃo Negro. The Sisters of the Divine Savior (also known as the Salvatorian Sisters) is a Roman Catholic religious institute co-founded on December 8, 1888 in Tivoli, Italy. Founder, Blessed Francis Mary of the Cross Jordan, was beatified on May 15, 2021 in Rome. He also founded the Salvatorian Fathers and Brothers in 1881. The Cathedral of Our Lady of Mercy ( es, Catedral de Nuestra Señora de las Mercedes) is the main Roman Catholic church building of Mercedes, Uruguay. It is the see of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Mercedes since 1960. History Built in Neoclassical style with design of Swiss architect Antonio Petrochi, it was consecrated in 1867. Villa Soriano
Villa Soriano is a town in the Soriano Department of Uruguay. Historically, it was also known as Santo Domingo de Soriano. It had acquired the status of "Villa" (town) before the Independence of Uruguay. Location It is located on the northwest end of Route 96, on the south bank of the river RÃo Negro, before it discharges into RÃo Uruguay. History In 1624, a Franciscan Mission established a village for the indigenous tribes of the area named Santo Domingo de Soriano. It constituted the first permanent European settlement on Uruguayan soil, predating the foundation of Colonia del Sacramento by more than fifty years. It was moved to its current location in 1708. The construction of its church began in 1751. The town has strong associations with General José Gervasio Artigas, who is honoured by Uruguayans as the 19th century liberator of the country.
