The Yehudi Menuhin International Competition for Young Violinists (or simply the Menuhin Competition) is an international music competition for violinists under the age of 22. It was founded by Yehudi Menuhin in 1983 with the goal of nurturing young violinists. In its early years, the competition took place in Folkestone on the south coast of England. Since 1998, it has been held biennially in different cities around the world. The Yehudi Menuhin School is a Specialist school, specialist music school in Stoke d'Abernon, Surrey, England, founded in 1963 by violinist and conductor Yehudi Menuhin. The current director of music is the British classical pianist Ashley Wass. The school is one of the five established musical schools for school-age children in the United Kingdom, along with Chetham's School of Music, Wells Cathedral School, the Purcell School and St. Mary's Music School, Edinburgh. Jeremy Louis Eugene Menuhin (born 2 November 1951) is a composer and pianist and the son of violinist Yehudi Menuhin. Early life Menuhin was born in San Francisco, California, the fourth son of his father Yehudi Menuhin and the second of his mother Diana Gould (dancer), Diana Gould Menuhin. He attended Eton College near Windsor, Berkshire. He describes his childhood as economically privileged but emotionally "grotesque", his father as "cold and detached", and his mother as "domineering and volatile". Unlike father Yehudi, who was pushed towards music at a young age by his own mother (Jeremy's grandmother), Jeremy himself did not have any musical education until his nanny began arranging it in response to his interest. Hephzibah Menuhin (20 May 19201 January 1981) was an American-Australian pianist, writer, and human rights campaigner. She was sister to the violinist Yehudi Menuhin and to the pianist, painter, and poet Yaltah Menuhin. She was also a linguist and writer, co-authoring several books and writing many papers with her second husband, Richard Hauser. Early life Hephzibah Menuhin was born in San Francisco, California. Through her father Moshe Menuhin, Menuhin was descended from a distinguished rabbinical dynasty. Her mother, Marutha, has been described as "dominant and controlling". Joel Ryce-Menuhin (June 11, 1933 – March 31, 1998) was an American piano, pianist, who later became a Jungian psychologist in private practice. Biography Joel Ryce-Menuhin was born as Joel Taylor Rice in Sterling, Illinois to Joseph Kenneth Rice (1901–1998) and Emily Bours Thompson Rice (1898–1982). At a young age he showed considerable talent as a pianist, attending the Juilliard School along with pianist Van Cliburn as a student of Rosina Lhévinne. While later studying in London with famed pianist Dame Myra Hess in 1959, Joel Rice was introduced to Yaltah Menuhin, sister of violinist Yehudi Menuhin, who had come to play in the Bath Festival. Yaltah Menuhin (7 October 1921 – 9 June 2001) was an American-born British pianist, artist and poet. Early life Yaltah was born in San Francisco, the youngest of three extraordinarily musically gifted children. Her siblings were Yehudi Menuhin and Hephzibah Menuhin. Through her father Moshe Menuhin, she descended from a distinguished rabbinical dynasty. Yaltah was named after her mother, Marutha's, home town of Yalta in Crimea. At the age of three, she became part of the rigorous regime already imposed on her siblings: the family employed tutors for the children, and Yaltah had her first piano lessons from the wife of the tutor in harmony and counterpoint. In 1960, she married (third marriage) an American pianist Joel Ryce who later retrained as a psychotherapist. Joel died in 1998. Moshe Menuhin (1893–1983) was an American Jewish writer and teacher of Hebrew. Biography Menuhin was born Moshe Mnuchin in Gomel to a distinguished, religious Lithuanian Jewish family. He was the great great grandson of Rabbi Shneur Zalman of Liadi, the founder of Chabad Hassidism as well as Rabbi Levi Yitzchok of Berditchev. When the family moved to the Yishuv, Moshe was sent to Orthodox Jewish schools, first to Yeshivas in Jerusalem, then to the Hebrew Gymnasia Herzlia in Jaffa - Tel Aviv. In 1913 he came to the United States to complete his higher education, attending New York University where he studied mathematics, political science and education. The Menuhin Festival Gstaad is a music festival founded by the violinist Yehudi Menuhin held every summer since 1957 in the Swiss alpine town of Gstaad, after being asked by the director of tourism to "enhance the summer season with some concerts". The Menuhin family settled in Gstaad in 1957, the year of the first Menuhin Festival Gstaad. It now consists of more than 50 concerts over a period of seven weeks, with a vast array of famous soloists and ensembles alike. In 2012, it was held between Friday, 20 July and 8 September. Although Gstaad is the main focus of activities, many events take place in other venues in the Bernese Oberland.
