Art of Jiu Jitsu (AOJ) is a Brazilian jiu-jitsu academy and team started in 2012 by black belt world champion brothers Rafael and Guilherme Mendes together with RVCA founder PM Tenore. The academy is known for developing young grapplers for world-class competitions. History The Art Of Jiu Jitsu (AOJ) academy was established in 2012 by Rafael and Guilherme Mendes, in collaboration with RVCA founder PM Tenore, originally as an affiliate of Atos Jiu-Jitsu. The academy is located in Costa Mesa, California. In 2015, the Mendes brothers started the ''Believe & Achieve Grappling Scholarship,'' a training scholarship to provide select juvenile athletes full room and board, assistance with event registration and travel, and the opportunity to train with one of the world's top competitive teams. Brazilian jiu-jitsu (BJJ; pt, jiu-jitsu brasileiro ) is a self-defence martial art and combat sport based on grappling, ground fighting (ne-waza) and submission holds. BJJ focuses on the skill of taking an opponent to the ground, controlling one's opponent, gaining a dominant position, and using a number of techniques to force them into submission via joint locks or chokeholds. Brazilian jiu-jitsu was initially developed in 1926 by Brazilian brothers Carlos, Oswaldo, Gastão Jr., George, and Hélio Gracie, after Carlos was taught jiu-jitsu by a travelling Japanese judoka, Mitsuyo Maeda who himself mastered his ground fighting while interacting with Taro Miyake (Tanabe student), Sadakazu Uyenishi (Handa, Tanabe) and Yukio Tani (Tenjin Shinyo-ryu) and catch wrestlers in Europe. Kade Ruotolo (born January 22, 2003) is an American submission grappler and black belt Brazilian jiu-jitsu athlete. A competitor with his twin brother Tye since the age of 3, Ruotolo is a IBJJF World champion, Pan Am and European Open champion at coloured belt level. Tammi Musumeci (born July 8, 1994) is an American submission grappler and black belt Brazilian jiu-jitsu competitor. A multiple times world champion in colored belts, Musumeci is a black belt world champion, a four-time No-Gi world champion and a two-time Pan American champion. Biography Born on July 8, 1994, in New Jersey, Musumeci began training in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu when she was six years old. Michael Musumeci Jr. (born July 7, 1996) is an American submission grappler and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt competitor. A four-time World Champion and Pan American Champion in colored belts, Musumeci is a five-time IBJJF black belt World Champion (four times in Gi and once in No-Gi), and the first American to win more than one IBJJF World title at black belt. Margot Ciccarelli (; born 17 November 1993) is a Brazilian jiu-jitsu competitor and coach. Representing Italy, she is a multiple-time World, World Pro, World No-Gi and European Open Champion in the lower belt divisions. Ciccarelli is a three-time World Championship medalist, a three-time Pan American Championship medalist and a European Championship black belt medalist. Cole Abate (born November 16, 2004) is an American submission grappler, and black belt Brazilian jiu-jitsu (BJJ) athlete. A competitor since early child years with multiple juvenile titles, Abate won, as a 16-year-old blue belt, the 2021 ADCC East Coast Trials. European IBJJF Jiu-Jitsu Championship
The European Championship or European Open (officially called the European IBJJF Jiu-Jitsu Championship) is the most prestigious and largest Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu tournament held in Europe by the International Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation (IBJJF). The tournament is an open championship accepting competitors from all countries. The IBJJF gives tournaments weighting which helps calculate the number of points an athlete can win via their participation. For the 2017/2018 IBJJF calendar the European Championship has a weighting of 4 alongside the Pan-American Championship (jiu-jitsu) making it second in importance only to the World Jiu-Jitsu Championship which has a weighting of 7. Jessamine Jada Khan (born 8 October 2001), often shortened as Jessa Khan ( km, ខាន់ ចេសា, Khăn Chésa ), is an American-born Cambodian jiu-jitsu athlete. She is the 2023 IBJJF World Champion. Career Khan represented Cambodia at the 2018 Asian Games and claimed a gold medal in the women's 49kg ne-waza event. This was also the first gold medal to be received by Cambodia which happened to be unexpected in the sport of ju-jitsu during the 2018 Asian Games.
