Erich Mendelsohn (21 March 1887 – 15 September 1953) was a German architect, known for his expressionist architecture in the 1920s, as well as for developing a dynamic Functionalism (architecture), functionalism in his projects for department stores and cinemas. Mendelsohn was a pioneer of the Art Deco and Streamline Moderne architecture, notably with his 1921 Mossehaus design. He was Professor Emeritus of the History of Science at Harvard University, where he was a faculty member from 1960 until his retirement in 2007. Carolyn Mendelsohn is an English portrait photographer. Life and work Mendelsohn originally trained and worked as an actor and film-maker, becoming a professional photographer in 2008. In 2016 she won a gold medal in the Royal Photographic Society's International Photography Exhibition (IPE 159) for ''Alice Being Inbetween'', part of her project "Being Inbetween" for which she is photographing girls aged 10 to 12; this portrait was also selected for the 2017 Portrait of Britain, being one of 100 photographs which were displayed on billboards nationwide. Fred Mendelsohn (May 16, 1917 – April 28, 2000) was an American music executive. The president of Savoy Records for 42 years, he was the first man to ever record, promote and market black gospel music as a national company. His dedication and contributions built the historic foundation for the black gospel music industry. Many of today's major gospel artists started on Savoy under the leadership of Mendelsohn. As a talent scout for the label, he discovered artists such as Nappy Brown, C. J. Johnson, and James Cleveland, and promoted Cleveland with many background church choirs. Moses Mendelssohn (6 September 1729 – 4 January 1786) was a German-Jewish philosopher and theologian. His writings and ideas on Jews and the Jewish religion and identity were a central element in the development of the ''Haskalah'', or 'Jewish Enlightenment' of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Anna Mendelssohn (born Anna Mendleson,Her name is frequently given as Anna Mendelson. 1948 – 15 November 2009), who wrote under the name Grace Lake, was a British writer, poet and political activist. He was born in Ratibor, Province of Silesia; the son of Felix Mendelssohn's cousin Wilhelm Mendelssohn (1821–1866) who, in 1854, had married Louise Aimee Cauer (sister to Bertha Cauer). Vladimir Mendelssohn (29 November 1949 – 13 August 2021) was a Romanian composer, violist, and professor. He had served as Director of the Kuhmo Chamber Music Festival since August 2005. Biography Mendelssohn was born into a family of musicians and attended the National University of Music Bucharest. He taught at a number of conservatories, such as the Conservatoire de Paris, where he served as a professor of chamber music.
