Carolyn Mendelsohn
Carolyn Mendelsohn is an English portrait photographer. Life and work Mendelsohn originally trained and worked as an actor and film-maker, becoming a professional photographer in 2008. In 2016 she won a gold medal in the Royal Photographic Society's International Photography Exhibition (IPE 159) for ''Alice Being Inbetween'', part of her project "Being Inbetween" for which she is photographing girls aged 10 to 12; this portrait was also selected for the 2017 Portrait of Britain, being one of 100 photographs which were displayed on billboards nationwide. Her ''Maria, 10'' from the same project is included in IPE 160. Each girl chooses her own clothes and pose. Mendelsohn says that girls of this age-group are "at a vulnerable stage and are often hidden within the cocoon of familial protection until they emerge as young women", and that "The series is a way of giving a voice and face to the girl I was and the girls who are; a way to explore the hidden complexity, duality and contrad ...

Royal Photographic Society
The Royal Photographic Society of Great Britain, commonly known as the Royal Photographic Society (RPS), is one of the world's oldest photographic societies. It was founded in London, England, in 1853 as the Photographic Society of London with the objective of promoting the art and science of photography, and in 1853 received Monarchy of the United Kingdom, royal patronage from Queen Victoria and Albert, Prince Consort, Prince Albert. A change to the society's name to reflect the patronage was, however, not considered expedient at the time. In 1874, it was renamed the Photographic Society of Great Britain, and only from 1894 did it become known as the Royal Photographic Society of Great Britain, a title which it continues to use today. On 25 June 2019, the Duchess of Cambridge, now Catherine, Princess of Wales, became the Society's Patron, taking over from Queen Elizabeth II who had been patron since 1952. Portrait Of Britain
Portrait of Britain is an annual British portrait photography competition run by the ''British Journal of Photography.'' Its subject is the diversity of British people. The 100 winning portraits are displayed on JCDecaux's digital screens across Britain throughout the month of September. It launched in 2016. Since 2018, an eponymously titled book has been published with 200 of the shortlisted portraits from each competition. Details The competition's subject is the diversity of British people "and the way their narratives reflect its widely unstable political and social landscape." It was partly inspired by Brexit. It is open to anyone to enter but photographs must have been taken within the previous six years and "depict subjects living in the UK (England, Scotland, Wales & Northern Ireland) at the time of the photograph."
