Icod or Icode was one of nine menceyatos guanches (native kingdoms) that had divided the island of Tenerife (Canary Islands, Spain) after the death of mencey Tinerfe. It occupied a part of the extension of the existing municipalities of El Tanque, La Guancha, Tenerife, La Guancha, Icod de los Vinos as well as part of Garachico. Guanches
The Guanches were the indigenous inhabitants of the Canary Islands in the Atlantic Ocean some west of Africa. It is believed that they may have arrived on the archipelago some time in the first millennium BCE. The Guanches were the only native people known to have lived in the Macaronesian archipelago region before the arrival of Europeans, as there is no accepted evidence that the other Macaronesian archipelagos (the Cape Verde Islands, Madeira and the Azores) were inhabited. After the Spanish conquest of the Canaries starting in the early 15th century, many natives were wiped out by the Spanish settlers while others interbred with the settler population, although elements of their culture survive within Canarian customs and traditions, such as Silbo (the whistled language of La Gomera Island). Tinerfe "the Great", legendary hero who was a guanche mencey (aboriginal king) of the island of Tenerife ( Canary Islands, Spain). It is estimated that he lived at the end of the 14th century. He was the son of mencey Sunta, who ruled the island in the days before the conquest of the Canary Islands by Castile. Tinerfe the Great lived in Adeje (like all his predecessors), approximately hundred years before the conquest of 1494. Upon Tinerfe's death, his sons divided the island into nine kingdoms. Icod de los Vinos is a municipality in the province of Santa Cruz de Tenerife (province), Santa Cruz de Tenerife on the island of Tenerife, in the Canary Islands (Spain), located in the northwestern part of the island. Garachico
Garachico is a Municipio, municipality and town on the northern coast of Tenerife, about 52 km West of the capital Santa Cruz de Tenerife, 50 km from Tenerife North Airport and 67 km from Tenerife South Airport. The town itself nestles below a 500m+ (1500 ft) cliff. The city of Garachico with its port was founded by the Genoan banker Cristóbal de Ponte after the conquest of Tenerife in 1496. The May 5, 1706 Eruption of Trevejo (1706), eruption originating from the northwest rift zone was a major event in the town's history. Prior to then, Garachico was an important port exporting Malvasia, Malmsey Wine and other local produce. However, a several-week-long eruption poured lava into the old bay and effectively destroyed the town's livelihood. The town itself was partially destroyed. Pelinor (mencey)
Pelinor was a Guanche mencey king of Menceyato de Adeje at the time of the conquest of Tenerife in the fifteenth century. Alongside the menceyes of Abona and Güímar, Pelinor negotiated peace around 1490 with Pedro de Vera Pedro is a masculine given name. Pedro is the Spanish, Portuguese, and Galician name for ''Peter''. Its French equivalent is Pierre while its English and Germanic form is Peter. The counterpart patronymic surname of the name Pedro, meaning " ..., Governor of Gran Canaria, ratifying a treaty with Alonso Fernández de Lugo at the beginning of the conquest in 1494. Once the war ended, Pelinor was the only mencey not brought to the Peninsula to be presented to the Catholic Monarchs. As a mencey who actively supported the conquerors in the peace negotiations, he was amply rewarded by the new authorities.
