Menaldum
Menaam ( nl, Menaldum) is a village in Waadhoeke municipality in the province of Friesland, the Netherlands. It had a population of around 2,609 citizens in January 2017. Before 2018, the village was part of the Menameradiel municipality. There are two windmills in the village, De Kievit and De Rentmeester. History The village was first mentioned in the 13th century Menaldum, and means "settlement of Meynald (person)". Menaam is a ''terp'' (artificial living hill) village from several centuries before Christ. Menaam was the capital of the ''grietenij'' (forerunner of the municipality) Menaldumadeel. The Dutch Reformed church is a successor of the medieval church which was built in stages using its predecessor. In 1855, the choir was rebuilt. The tower followed in 1866, and the nave was constructed in 1874. The polder mill De Rentmeester was built in 1833 in Dronrijp. De Rentmeester, Menaldum
De Rentmeester ( en, The Steward) is a smock mill in Menaam, Friesland, Netherlands which was built in Dronryp in 1857 and moved to a new site at Menaldum in 1982, replacing a mill that had burnt down. The mill has been restored to working order. It is listed as a Rijksmonument. History The mill was built in 1857 to drain the Noorderpolder at Dronryp. A mill had previously been built on that site in 1833. For many years, a diesel engine located in the mill had worked the Archimedes' screw. In latter years, the mill stood derelict. The Original mill on the site now occupied by ''De Rentmeester'' was ''De Kooi'' ( en, The Cow). It was built in 1833 to drain the Zuidoosterderpolder. The mill burnt down on 25 March 1969. The mill was moved here in 1981 by millwright Tacoma of Stiens. The mill's restoration was celebrated with an official opening ceremony on 29 October 1982. A further restoration took place in 1995. De Kievit, Menaldum
De Kievit ( en, The Lapwing) is a smock mill in Menaam, Friesland, Netherlands which was built in 1802. The mill has been restored to working order. It is listed as a Rijksmonument. History ''De Kievit'' was built in 1802 to drain or pump water into the Berikumerpolder as required. In 1986 it was sold to the Stichting Molens in Menaldumadeel. The mill was restored to working order between 1992 and 1995. It no longer drains the polder, but pumps water in a circuit for demonstration purposes. The mill is listed as a Rijksmonument, number 28578. Description ''De Kievit'' is what the Dutch describe as a ''Grondzeiler''. It is a two-storey smock mill on a single-storey base. Sije Visser
Sije Visser (born 27 August 1950) is a Dutch former professional footballer and sports administrator. Known for his hard working defensive play, he remains the record appearance holder at Eredivisie club NEC Nijmegen, playing 440 games over fifteen seasons. Career Born in Menaldum, a village in Friesland, Visser started his career at semi-professional club Hermes DVS in Schiedam, where he played primarily as a left-back, until 1971, when he signed his first professional contract at NEC Nijmegen, then playing in the Eredivisie, the top flight of Dutch football. He spent fifteen seasons with the club, becoming the all-time record appearance maker. After his retirement in 1986, he became a board member at the club, and also worked in the scouting department. He resigned from his position in 2014, in the wake of the club's relegation from the top flight. After retirement he also worked as a tax adviser. Grietenij
A ''grietenij'' was a forerunner to the ''gemeente'' or municipality in Frisia, particularly in Friesland, and also in Groningen which are now a part of the Netherlands. From the end of the 16th century until 1851, there were a total of 30 ''grietenijen'' in Friesland. The term ''grietenij'' means the administrative district of a ''grietman''. The term ''grietman'' means a man who greets. The ''grietenijen'' were found in the counties of Oostergo, Westergo and Zevenwouden. In the municipality law in 1851, the term ''grietenij'' was changed to gemeente or municipality, and the term ''grietman'' was changed to ''burgemeester'' or mayor. Waadhoeke
Waadhoeke is a municipality of Friesland in the northern Netherlands. It was established 1 January 2018 and consists of the former municipalities of Franekeradeel, het Bildt, Menameradiel and parts of Littenseradiel, all four of which were dissolved on the same day. The municipality is located in the province of Friesland, in the north of the Netherlands. Waadhoeke is bordered by Harlingen, Terschelling, Ferwerderadiel, Leeuwarden and Súdwest-Fryslân. Dronrijp
Dronryp ( nl, Dronrijp) is a village in the Dutch municipality of Waadhoeke. On 1 January 2017, it had 3,281 inhabitants. History and architecture Before 2018, the village was part of the Menameradiel municipality. A few centuries BC, a settlement developed around where the street Tsjerkebuorren is now (Stenvert et al., 2000). Another settlement came into existence nearby when a canal between Leeuwarden and Harlingen was completed in 1507. (Part of it was filled up in 1940.) Between roughly 1850 and 1950, these two gradually merged.
