Men Without Hats
Men Without Hats are a Canadian New wave music, new wave and synth-pop band, originally from Montreal, Quebec. Their music is characterized by the baritone voice of their lead singer Ivan Doroschuk, as well as their elaborate use of synthesizers and electronic processing. They achieved their greatest popularity in the 1980s with "The Safety Dance", a worldwide top ten hit (No. 3 in the United States), and "Pop Goes the World (song), Pop Goes the World". After a hiatus for most of the 1990s and 2000s, Doroschuk reformed the band in 2010, and released ''Love in the Age of War'' (2012). Pop Goes The World
''Pop Goes the World'' is the third studio album by Canadian new wave and synth-pop band Men Without Hats, released on June 29, 1987 by Mercury Records. It features the single " Pop Goes the World", which reached the Top 20 in Canada (achieving gold status) and the United States. The album went platinum in Canada. Ian Anderson of Jethro Tull makes a guest appearance and plays the flute on the track "On Tuesday." Other songs Early in the recording sessions, a song called "The Same Halo" was recorded by the band for the album but was ultimately replaced by "Lose My Way" on the album. "Jenny Wore Black" was first performed live in 1985 during the "Freeways" tour. In 1990, Doroschuk wrote the song "A Funny Place (The World Is)", which reused part of the lyrics from "The Real World". Ivan Doroschuk
Ivan Eugene Doroschuk (, ), born 9 October 1957, is an American-born Canadian musician. He is the lead vocalist and founding member of Men Without Hats, best known for the hit song "The Safety Dance". Early life Ivan Doroschuk was born on 9 October 1957 in Champaign, Illinois to Ukrainian-Canadian parents Eugene and Betty Doroschuk. Doroschuk and his younger brothers Stefan and Colin were born in the United States while their father was pursuing a doctorate at the University of Illinois at Urbana–Champaign. Eugene Doroschuk received his PhD in 1962, and accepted a teaching position at the Université de Montréal. Betty Doroschuk became a member of the music faculty at Montreal's McGill University, teaching classical voice. The three brothers, all classically trained musicians, grew up in the Montreal borough of Outremont, Quebec. Ultravox
Ultravox (earlier styled as Ultravox!) were a British new wave band, formed in London in April 1974 as Tiger Lily. Between 1980 and 1986, they scored seven Top Ten albums and seventeen Top 40 singles in the UK, the most successful of which was their 1981 hit "Vienna". From 1974 until 1979, singer John Foxx was frontman and the main driving force behind Ultravox. Foxx left the band in March 1979 to embark on a solo career and, following his departure, Midge Ure officially took over as lead singer, guitarist and frontman on 1st November 1979 (despite writing and rehearsing with the band from April of that year) after he and keyboardist Billy Currie worked in the studio project Visage. ''The Adventures of Women & Men Without Hate in the 21st Century'', often shortened to ''In the 21st Century'', is the fourth studio album by Canadian synth-pop group Men Without Hats, released in 1989. Freeways (EP)
''Freeways'' is the second EP released by Canadian synthpop group Men Without Hats. It was released in Canada only, and for a limited time. Released in 1985, it contains songs originally released on the group's 1980 EP '' Folk of the 80's'', plus several versions of the song "Freeways". History The first release of any version of the song was as music video filmed for the French version of the song in 1981, premiering that year on the Musi-Video show in Montreal. "Freeways (Euromix)" first appeared as a B-side track on a European 12" edition of the " I Got the Message" single in 1982. To date, it is the only version of the song to appear on CD, being released on the '' Greatest Hats'' compilation in 1996, however fans created a bootleg CD version of the EP including all four mixes. The version of "Freeways (Euromix)" used on ''Greatest Hats'' was ripped from vinyl and donated by a fan. ''Folk of the 80's (Part III)'' is the second studio album by Canadian synthpop group Men Without Hats, released in early 1984. The album reached #127 on the U.S. ''Billboard'' 200 albums chart. It was the band's final album with the lineup consisting of Ivan Doroschuk (vocals), Stefan Doroschuk (guitar), Colin Doroschuk (keyboards) and Allan McCarthy (keyboards). During the recording process, "The Safety Dance" became big in America, requiring the band to put recording on hold and do a tour. This album was re-released on CD in Canada in 1997 by Oglio Records as part of a "two-fer" including ''Rhythm of Youth''. It was also re-mastered and re-released in Canada in 2010 by Bulldog Brothers/Unidisc. In addition to the tracks on the LP, it also contains an extended version of "Where Do The Boys Go?". ''Rhythm of Youth'' is the debut studio album by Canadian new wave and synth-pop band Men Without Hats, released in April 1982 by Statik Records in Europe and Canada and in 1983 by Backstreet Records in the US.
