Memphis Group
The Memphis Group, also known as Memphis Milano, was an Italian design and architecture group founded by Ettore Sottsass. It was active from 1980 to 1987. The group designed postmodern furniture, lighting, fabrics, carpets, ceramics, glass and metal objects. The Memphis group's work often incorporated plastic laminate and terrazzo materials and was characterized by ephemeral design featuring colorful and abstract decoration as well as asymmetrical shapes, sometimes arbitrarily alluding to exotic or earlier styles and designs. Christian Dior
Christian Ernest Dior (; 21 January 1905 – 24 October 1957) was a French fashion designer, best known as the founder of one of the world's top fashion houses, Christian Dior SE, which is now owned by parent company LVMH. His fashion houses are known all around the world, specifically "on five continents in only a decade" (Sauer). He was the second child of a family of seven, born to Maurice Dior and Madeleine Martin, in the town of Granville. Dior's artistic skills led to his employment and design for various well-known fashion icons in attempts to preserve the fashion industry during World War II. Post-war, he founded and established the Dior fashion house, with his collection of the " New Look" revolutionising women's dress and contributing to the reestablishment of Paris as the centre of the fashion world. American Apparel Inc. is an online-only retailer and former brick-and-mortar stores operator based in Los Angeles, California. Nathalie Du Pasquier
Nathalie Du Pasquier (born 1957) is a Milan-based artist and designer mostly known for her work as a founding member of the Memphis Group. Her early body of work includes furniture, textiles, clothing designs and jewelry in addition to iconic work in decoration and patterns. Since 1987, she has consistently dedicated herself to painting. Early life Du Pasquier was born in Bordeaux, France, in 1957. Du Pasquier drew influence from her parents. Her mother was an art historian, which gave Du Pasquier an appreciation for classic art. From 1975 to 1977, she traveled through Gabon and West Africa, and in 1979 she moved to Milan. Peter Shire
Peter Shire (born 1947) is a Los Angeles-based artist. Shire was born in the Echo Park district of Los Angeles, where he currently lives and works. His sculpture, furniture and ceramics have been exhibited in the United States, Italy, France, Japan and Poland. His work includes a sculpture in Elysian Park to honor the work done by Grace Simons and Peter Glass which kept the park open as green space. Shire has been associated with the Memphis Group of designers, has worked on the Design Team for the 1984 Summer Olympics with the American Institute of Architects, and has designed public sculptures in Los Angeles and other California cities. Martine Bedin
Martine Bedin is a French architect and designer. She was a member of the Memphis Group. Biography Bedin was born in 1957 in the port of Bordeaux where she knew Nathalie Du Pasquier who would be a fellow designer. She learnt about architecture in Paris. She was awarded a scholarship in 1978 and as a result she went to live in Florence. She discovered modern architecture there with Adolfo Natalini and the Superstudio group. In 1979, Natalini invited her to Milan, when she met the designer Michele De Lucchi and the architect Ettore Sottsass. Also in 1979, her Casa Decorata was displayed at the Milan Triennial XVI. She worked with Sottsass who was based in Milan. Corporate Memphis (alternative names: Alegria Art, Big Tech Art, or Flat Art) is a term used to describe a Flat design, flat, geometric Style (visual arts), art style, widely associated with Big Tech illustrations in the late 2010s and early 2020s. It has been criticized by some as uninspired or dystopian, though some illustrators have defended the style, pointing at what they claim to be its art-historical legitimacy.
