"Memphis, Tennessee", sometimes shortened to "Memphis", is a song by Chuck Berry, first released in 1959. In the UK, the song charted at number 6 in 1963; at the same time Decca Records issued a cover version in the UK by Dave Berry and the Cruisers, which also became a UK Top 20 hit single. Johnny Rivers's version of the song was a number two US hit in 1964. Background In the song the narrator is speaking to a long-distance operator, trying to find out the number of a girl named Marie, who lives in Memphis, Tennessee, "on the southside, high upon a ridge, just a half a mile from the Mississippi bridge." The narrator offers little information to the operator at first, only that he misses Marie and that they were separated by Marie's mother. Chuck Berry
Charles Edward Anderson Berry (October 18, 1926 – March 18, 2017) was an American singer, songwriter and guitarist who pioneered rock and roll. Randolph Peter Best (né Scanland; born 24 November 1941) is an English musician known as the drummer of the English rock band the Beatles who was dismissed immediately prior to the band achieving worldwide fame. At The Whisky à Go Go
''Johnny Rivers at the Whisky à Go Go'' (shown as "''At Whisky-A-Go-Go''" on the original label) is a live album and is the debut album from American rock and roll singer, songwriter and guitarist Johnny Rivers. The album was released in February 1964, just as The Beatles and the British music invasion was getting into full swing. Rivers was asked to open the Whisky a Go Go nightclub in Los Angeles starting January 15, 1964 and during that run he recorded the album. With the help of producer Lou Adler, Johnny helped introduce the "Go Go sound" to rock and roll. The album reached #13 on Billboard's Pop Albums chart, (#12 on the Billboard 200) and became Johnny's first gold album. The album also gave Rivers his very first big hit, a cover version of Chuck Berry's 1959 hit "Memphis (song), Memphis". Fraternity Records
Fraternity Records is a small record label based in Cincinnati, Ohio. It was started by Harry Carlson and silent partner Dr. Ashton Welsh in 1954. The first recording to be released on Fraternity was Jerri Winters' "Winter's Here". The first hit was Cathy Carr's rendition of a Tin Pan Alley song, "Ivory Tower" in 1956. It made #2, besting a cover version by Otis Williams & the Charms. A year later came the Jimmy Dorsey #2 charting instrumental "So Rare", the famous bandleader's final hit before his death. 1959 saw another big hit, Bill Parsons' "The All American Boy", which also peaked at #2 on the ''Billboard'' pop charts. Parsons was a friend of country singer Bobby Bare and it was actually Bare's voice heard on the hit record. Parsons sang on the B-side. Blues rock is a fusion music genre that combines elements of blues and rock music. Instrumental rock is rock music that emphasizes musical instruments and features very little or no singing. The Wham Of That Memphis Man
''The Wham of That Memphis Man'' is a 1963 album by Lonnie Mack. This album, Mack's first, was recorded in several sessions beginning in March, 1963 and was released by the small Cincinnati label Fraternity Records in October of that year. It reached only #103 on the charts, but music critic Jimmy Guterman ranked it No. 16 in his book ''The 100 Best Rock 'n' Roll Records of All Time.'' Mack is considered a pioneer of virtuoso rock guitar soloing and a key stylistic forerunner of the Blues-rock and Southern rock guitar genres, for his fast-paced instrumental solos, including his 1963 hit singles, "Memphis" and "Wham!"
