This is a list of members of the Western Australian Legislative Council between 22 May 2013 and 21 May 2017: : North Metropolitan Labor MLC Ljiljanna Ravlich resigned on 10 March 2015. Martin Pritchard was elected in a countback on 21 April. : South West Liberal MLC Nigel Hallett resigned from the Liberal Party on 16 June 2016 and joined the Shooters, Fishers and Farmers Party. : North Metropolitan Labor MLC Ken Travers resigned on 29 August 2016. Laine McDonald was elected in a countback on 27 September 2016. : East Metropolitan Labor MLC Amber-Jade Sanderson resigned on 5 February 2017 to contest the Legislative Assembly, while Agricultural National MLC Paul Brown and North Metropolitan Liberal MLC Peter Katsambanis resigned on 6 February 2017 for the same purpose. Western Australian Legislative Council
The Western Australian Legislative Council is the upper house of the Parliament of Western Australia, a state of Australia. It is regarded as a house of review for legislation passed by the Legislative Assembly, the lower house. The two Houses of Parliament sit in Parliament House in the state capital, Perth. Effective on 20 May 2005, for the election of members of the Legislative Council, the State was divided into 6 electoral regions by community of interest —3 metropolitan and 3 rural—each electing 6 members to the Legislative Council.. The 2005 changes continued to maintain the previous malapportionment in favour of rural regions. Legislation was passed in 2021 to abolish these regions and increase the size of the council to 37 seats, all of which will be elected by the state-at-large. Peter Collier (politician)
Peter Charles Collier (born 25 February 1959) is an Australian politician who has been a Liberal Party member of the Legislative Council of Western Australia since 2005, representing North Metropolitan Region. He served as a minister in the government of Colin Barnett from 2008 until its defeat at the 2017 election. Early life Collier was born in Kalgoorlie, Western Australia, to Beryl Lillian (née Davies) and Les Collier. He attended Eastern Goldfields Senior High School before going on to the University of Western Australia, where he studied teaching. After graduating, Collier taught at various high schools in the Perth metropolitan area, both public and private. He taught for periods at John Curtin Senior High School (1981–1983), Lesmurdie Senior High School (1985–1986), Presbyterian Ladies' College (1987–1988), and Scotch College (1990–2005). Shooters And Fishers Party
The Shooters, Fishers and Farmers Party (SFF) is an Australian political party. It primarily advocates for increased funding and services for rural and regional Australia, protecting the right to farm, enhancing commercial and recreational fishing, tougher sentencing for illegal firearm trade and usage, and relaxing gun control for law abiding citizens. The party was formed in 1992, and was known simply as the Shooters Party. It initially operated only in New South Wales, but has since expanded into other states. It was registered with the Australian Electoral Commission (AEC) in 2007, and contested its first federal election the same year. In July 2009, the party changed its name to the Shooters and Fishers Party, and in April 2016, the name was changed to its current name. Nigel Hallett
Nigel Charles Hallett (born 6 February 1953) is an Australian politician. He was a member of the Western Australian Legislative Council representing the South West Region from 2005 to 2017. Elected to Parliament in the 2005 state election he was a member of the Liberal Party until 16 June 2016, when he announced he was resigning from the Liberal Party and joining the Shooters, Fishers and Farmers Party, he represented at the 2017 election. He was not re-elected. Hallett completed his early education in Bridgetown but completed high school education at Hampton Senior High School in Perth. He is married to Susan Hallett and they have two sons; Ian and Michael. Dave Grills
Dave Grills (born 12 April 1959) is an Australian politician. He was elected to the Western Australian Legislative Council as a Nationals member for Mining and Pastoral Region at the 2013 state election. He was defeated at the 2017 state election. He is running to regain his old seat at the 2021 state election with the Western Australia Party. Although scheduled to take his seat on 22 May 2013, he was elected in a recount on 5 April to the vacancy caused by the resignation of Wendy Duncan to contest the Legislative Assembly seat of Kalgoorlie. Grills was born in Birmingham, England and arrived in Western Australia in 1965. Prior to his election, he was a Kalgoorlie-based police officer and served for a period as the Goldfields-Esperance District Crime Prevention and Diversity Officer. Nick Goiran
Nicolas Pierre Goiran (born 15 October 1977) is an Australian politician who has been a member for the South Metropolitan Region of the Western Australian Legislative Council (MLC), the upper house of the Parliament of Western Australia, since 22 May 2009. A member of the Liberal Party, Australia's major right-wing political party, Goiran is a conservative Christian. He is pro-life, and opposes same-sex marriage, euthanasia and surrogacy. He has been outspoken on the issue of elder abuse, and he supports COVID-19 vaccinations but opposes vaccine mandates. Electoral Region Of South West
The South West Region is a multi-member electoral region of the Western Australian Legislative Council the South West, Peel and part of the Great Southern regions of the state. It was created by the ''Acts Amendment (Electoral Reform) Act 1987'', and became effective on 22 May 1989 with seven members who had been elected at the 1989 state election three months earlier. At the 2008 election, it was reduced to six members. The region includes the cities of Albany, Bunbury and Mandurah. Legislation to abolish the region, along with all other Western Australian Electoral Regions was passed in November 2021, with the 2025 state election to use a single state-wide electorate of 37 members. Adele Farina
Adele Farina (born 31 March 1964) is an Australian politician. She was a Labor Party member of the Western Australian Legislative Council from 2001 to 2021, representing South West Region. She served as parliamentary secretary to three different state ministers: the Minister for Planning and Infrastructure, Minister for Indigenous Affairs, Tourism, Culture and the Arts, and Minister for Disability Services, Citizenship, Multicultural Interests and Women's Interests. Early career Farina was born in Perth, and studied arts and law at the University of Western Australia. She was subsequently employed as the private secretary to Bob Pearce, Environment Minister in the Lawrence government, but this ended abruptly in 1992, when she was charged by police with stealing $3,280 worth of postage stamps from the state. Donna Evelyn Mary Faragher (née Taylor; born 12 September 1975) is an Australian politician who has been a Liberal Party member of the Legislative Council of Western Australia since 2005, representing East Metropolitan Region. She became a minister in the government of Colin Barnett in 2008, becoming the youngest woman to hold ministerial office in Western Australia. Early life Faragher was born in Perth to Joan Betty Light and Donald Franklin Taylor, both of whom were police officers.
