This is a list of members of the Western Australian Legislative Assembly from 2017 to 2021. List of members : On 5 February 2018, the Liberal member for Cottesloe and former Premier, Colin Barnett, resigned. Liberal candidate David Honey was elected to replace him at the by-election for Cottesloe on 17 March 2018. : On 8 May 2018, the independent (former Labor) member for Darling Range, Barry Urban, resigned after the parliamentary procedures and privileges committee recommended his expulsion for "sustained and gross" contempt. Western Australian Legislative Assembly
The Western Australian Legislative Assembly, or lower house, is one of the two chambers of the Parliament of Western Australia, an Australian state. The Parliament sits in Parliament House in the Western Australian capital, Perth. The Legislative Assembly today has 59 members, elected for four-year terms from single-member electoral districts. Members are elected using the preferential voting system. As with all other Australian states and territories, voting is compulsory for all Australian citizens over the legal voting age of 18. Role and operation Most legislation in Western Australia is initiated in the Legislative Assembly. The party or coalition that can command a majority in the Legislative Assembly is invited by the Governor to form a government. Electoral District Of North West Central
North West Central is an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly in the Australian state of Western Australia. The district is mostly based in the rural north-west of Western Australia. It is currently a marginal seat for the Nationals. History First known as North West Coastal, the district was first created for the 2005 state election, incorporating territory from the abolished districts of Burrup and Ningaloo. The seat was won by Labor MP, and then member for Burrup, Fred Riebeling. The district was expanded for the 2008 state election, incorporating more inland territory which resulted in the name change to North West. With Riebeling's decision to retire, the contest pitted Labor MP Vince Catania, then a member of the Legislative Council, against Liberal candidate, and former Ningaloo MP, Rod Sweetman, with Catania emerging victorious. Emily Hamilton (politician)
Emily Louise Hamilton (born 14 January 1985) is an Australian politician. She has been a Labor member of the Western Australian Legislative Assembly since the 2017 state election, representing the electorate of Joondalup. Early life and education Hamilton was born in Perth in 1985, the eldest of five children, to David and Angela Hamilton. Her father is a small business owner, and her mother is a spinal trained nurse. Hamilton graduated from Sacred Heart College, Sorento, in 2002. Hamilton graduated with a Bachelor of Politics and Law from University of Notre Dame Australia in 2006. Career From 2006, Hamilton spent ten years working for state Labor MPs Tony O'Gorman, Ken Travers and Laine McDonald, first as a research officer, and then as an electorate officer. Mirrabooka is an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly in the Australian state of Western Australia. Geography The district is based in the northern suburbs of Perth. It includes Alexander Heights, Balga, Koondoola, Mirrabooka, Westminster and parts of Ballajura and Dianella. History The district was created for the 2013 state election, essentially as a new name for the district of Nollamara. It was won by sitting Nollamara MP Janine Freeman. An earlier incarnation of the district existed from 1968 to 1974. First contested at the 1968 state election, it was won by Doug Cash of the Liberal Party. Cash was defeated one term later by Labor candidate Arthur Tonkin. Electoral District Of Kimberley
Kimberley is an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly of Western Australia, located in the state's far north and named after the Kimberley region. The electorate has one of the highest Aboriginal enrolments of any seat in the Parliament. The seat has been held by the Labor Party since 1980—inclusive of one term under a Labor Independent (1996–2001), but has become increasingly marginal in recent years. It saw an extremely close and almost unprecedented four-way race at the 2013 state election, with relatively small primary vote margins separating the Labor, Liberal, National and Green candidates in a result that was not known for several days. Josephine Farrer (born 24 September 1947) is an Australian politician who was a Labor Party member of the Legislative Assembly of Western Australia from 2013 to 2021, representing the seat of Kimberley. Central Wheatbelt is an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly in the Australian state of Western Australia. As the name suggests, the district is centrally located in the Wheatbelt region of Western Australia. Politically, Central Wheatbelt is a safe National Party seat. History Central Wheatbelt was first created for the 2008 state election. It was essentially an amalgamation of the abolished National-held districts of Avon and Merredin, although parts of each ended up in neighbouring districts. Roughly half the new district's voters came from each of the two former districts. The original proposal had the newly created district persisting with the name Merredin. Mia Jane Davies (born 3 November 1978) is an Australian politician who is the current Leader of the Opposition and leader of the National Party in Western Australia. She has been a member of the state Legislative Assembly since 2013, having previously served in the Legislative Council from 2009 to 2013. Davies was elected deputy leader of the Nationals in November 2013, and replaced Brendon Grylls as leader in March 2017 following his defeat at the 2017 state election. Electoral District Of Kwinana
Kwinana is an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly in the Australian state of Western Australia. The district is located in the south-western suburbs of Perth. History Kwinana was first created for the 2008 state election. It was a new urban seat created as a result of the one vote one value reforms. For the most part it combined the southern portion of the district of Cockburn with the northern part of the district of Peel; it also took in territory previously covered by the districts of Rockingham and Serpentine-Jarrahdale. At its creation, Kwinana was calculated to have a Labor Party majority of 69.2% to 30.8% versus the Liberal Party, making it a very safe Labor seat.
