Members Of The Victorian Legislative Council, 1925–1928
This is a list of members of the Victorian Legislative Council between the elections of 4 June 1925 and 2 June 1928. As half of the Legislative Council's terms expired at each triennial election, half of these members were elected at the 1922 triennial election with terms expiring in 1928, while the other half were elected at the 1925 triennial election with terms expiring in 1931. The Electoral Provinces Boundaries Act 1903 defined 17 Provinces with two members each for a total of 34 members. :Note the "Term in Office" refers to that members term(s) in the Council, not necessarily for that Province. Victorian Legislative Council
The Victorian Legislative Council (VLC) is the upper house of the bicameral Parliament of Victoria, Australia, the lower house being the Legislative Assembly. Both houses sit at Parliament House in Spring Street, Melbourne. The Legislative Council serves as a house of review, in a similar fashion to its federal counterpart, the Australian Senate. Although, it is possible for legislation to be first introduced in the Council, most bills receive their first hearing in the Legislative Assembly. The presiding officer of the chamber is the President of the Legislative Council. The Council presently comprises 40 members serving four-year terms from eight electoral regions each with five members. With each region electing 5 members using the single transferable vote, the quota in each region for election, after distribution of preferences, is 16.7% (one-sixth). Alfred Chandler (politician)
Alfred Elliott Chandler (1 July 1873 – 12 February 1935) was an Australian politician. Personal He was born in Malvern, Victoria to market gardener William Chandler and Kate Timewell. He attended state school and became a horticulturist, running a nursery in Boronia. On 24 May 1897, he married Elizabeth Ann Intermann, with whom he had one daughter. His wife died in 1899, following childbirth. Chandler remarried on 27 August 1901 to Marie Intermann, his first wife's sister. They had he had four sons and a daughter. Chandler died in Boronia in 1935. Political career He served on Ferntree Gully Shire Council from 1901 to 1935, with four terms as president (1908–09, 1918–19, 1923–24, 1934–35). Melbourne West Province was an electorate of the Victorian Legislative Council from 1904 until 2006. Arthur Disney
James Herbert Arthur Disney (8 December 1864 – 28 July 1943) was an Australian politician. He was born in Ballarat West to carter and tailor Charles Disney and Sarah Darley. He left school at fourteen to become a boilermaker, and from around 1886 worked in Melbourne. On 22 April 1886 he married Isabella Christina Hill, with whom he had five children. He left Melbourne in 1889, finding difficulty due to his union connections. He spent time as a fruiterer and woodyard proprietor, and from around 1898 was a second-hand furniture dealer. He served on South Melbourne City Council from 1908 to 1918 and was mayor from 1915 to 1916. In 1916 he was elected to the Victorian Legislative Council as a Labor member, representing Melbourne West Province. He was a minister without portfolio from July to November 1924 and from 1927 to 1928. His son James was elected to the Council in 1940 for the United Australia Party. Gippsland Province
Gippsland Province was an electorate of the Victorian Legislative Council from November 1882 until 2006. It was based in the Gippsland region of Victoria, Australia. Gippsland Province was created in the redistribution of provinces in 1882 when the Central and Eastern Provinces were abolished. The new Gippsland, North Central, South Yarra, North Yarra, South Eastern and Melbourne Provinces were then created. Gippsland province was defined in The Legislative Council Act 1881 and consisted of the divisions of Buln Buln, Narracan and Traralgon, Alberton, Rosedale, Maffra, Avon, Bairnsdale, Omeo, Towong, Yackandandah, Wodonga, Wood's Point, Walhalla and Sale. George Martley Davis
George Martley Davis (7 January 1860 – 20 July 1938) was an Australian politician. He was born in Emerald Hill to grazier George Davis and Mary Critchley Sylvester. He attended state and grammar schools and worked as a stock agent on the Paroo River in Queensland. From 1882 to 1887 he worked as a valuer for Maffra Shire Council before becoming a partner in a stock and station agency. On 7 March 1886 he married Jane Elizabeth Manson, with whom he had four children. He served on Rosedale Shire Council from 1908 to 1930 and was president from 1909 to 1910 and from 1918 to 1919. North Western Province (Victoria)
North Western Province (or North-Western Province) was an electorate of the Victorian Legislative Council (Australia), created in 1856 and was abolished in 2006. Victoria was a British colony in Australia when North-Western Province was created, it became a state of Australia on Federation on 1 January 1901. North Western was one of the six original upper house Provinces of the bi-cameral Victorian Parliament created in November 1856, each Province initially having five members. William Crockett (Australian Politician)
William Paul Crockett (c. 1864 – 25 July 1932) was an Australian politician. He was born in Mansfield to farmer Anthony Forrest Crockett and Annie McDermott. He attended state schools and worked on farms before becoming a carpenter. In 1888 he moved to Mildura, eventually becoming an orchardist. On 15 April 1891 he married Jessie Clark McMillan, with whom he had seven children. He served on Mildura Shire Council from 1908 to 1918 and was president from 1914 to 1917. In 1919 he won a by-election for the Victorian Legislative Council's North Western Province, representing the Victorian Farmers' Union. From that year he lived in Melbourne. Melbourne Province
Melbourne Province was an electorate of the Victorian Legislative Council (Australia). Melbourne Province was created in 1882 when Central Province was abolished in the redistribution of Provinces. Its area included central Melbourne, Carlton, Fawkner Park and Richmond. William Hearn and James Lorimer transferred from Central to Melbourne Province that year. Henry Cohen (politician)
Henry Isaac Cohen (21 February 1872 – 20 December 1942) was an Australian barrister and politician. Personal life Isaac Henry Cohen, always known as Henry Isaac, was born in Melbourne to financier David Cohen and Rachael Marks, both of London. On 27 June 1901 he married Ethel Mary Keon of Launceston, Tasmania. Cohen retained Jewish associations but his wife was a Catholic; their three sons and two daughters, who adopted the name Keon-Cohen, were brought up as Anglicans and attended Presbyterian schools. William Lionel Russell Clarke (31 March 1876 – 14 May 1954) was an Australian politician.
