Members Of The Tasmanian Legislative Council, 2010–2014
This is a list of members of the Tasmanian Legislative Council from 2010 to 2014. Terms of the Legislative Council do not coincide with House of Assembly elections, with members serving six-year terms, and two or three members facing re-election every year. The members have been categorised here according to the four-year terms of the House of Assembly so as to avoid the need for separate member lists for each year. :1 Apsley MLC Tania Rattray was re-elected unopposed at the 2010 periodic elections. Elwick MLC Terry Martin retired, and the election for his seat was won by Adriana Taylor. :2 Murchison MLC Ruth Forrest was re-elected unopposed at the 2011 periodic elections. Tasmanian Legislative Council
The Tasmanian Legislative Council is the upper house of the Parliament of Tasmania in Australia. It is one of the two chambers of the Parliament, the other being the House of Assembly. Both houses sit in Parliament House in the state capital, Hobart. Members of the Legislative Council are often referred to as MLCs. The Legislative Council has 15 members elected using preferential voting in 15 single-member electorates. Each electorate has approximately the same number of electors. A review of Legislative Council division boundaries is required every 9 years; the most recent was completed in 2017. Election of members in the Legislative Council are staggered. Elections alternate between three divisions in one year and in two divisions the next year. Elections take place on the first Saturday in May. The term of each MLC is six years. Tania Rattray
Tania Verene Rattray (born 28 March 1958) is an independent member of the Tasmanian Legislative Council (upper house) in the division of McIntyre. Rattray was educated at Winnaleah Area School and Scottsdale High School. Before becoming a full-time politician, she was an owner/operator of the Winnaleah Four Square Supermarket from 1988–1994. She was also a Senior Pharmacy Assistant at Galloways Pharmacy in Scottsdale from 1994–2004. She was elected to Dorset Council in 1996, becoming deputy mayor in 2002. Electoral Division Of Hobart
The electoral division of Hobart is one of the 15 electoral divisions in the Tasmanian Legislative Council. It was originally created in 1856 when the Council became the upper house of the Parliament of Tasmania. The seat was abolished in 1999 and re-created in 2008 after a redistribution saw the former division of Wellington returned to its former name. The total area of the division is , which covers the Hobart city centre and the suburbs of Battery Point, Dynnyrne, Fern Tree, Glebe, Lenah Valley, Mount Stuart, New Town, North Hobart, Ridgeway, South Hobart, and West Hobart. Doug Parkinson (politician)
Douglas John Parkinson (born 5 June 1945 in Hobart) is a former Australian politician. He was a Labor Party member of the Tasmanian Legislative Council for the electoral division of Hobart from 1994 until his retirement in 2012. Parkinson studied at St Virgil's College and the University of Tasmania, obtaining a Bachelor of Economics with Honours in 1971. He worked for the Commonwealth Public Service before studying law. After obtaining an LL.B. in 1981, he established a legal practice in Hobart and lectured part-time at the University of Tasmania. Parkinson was first elected to Hobart in 1994. Electoral Division Of Rumney
The electoral division of Rumney is one of the 15 electoral divisions in the Tasmanian Legislative Council (upper house). The division is located in Southern Tasmania to the east of the division of Pembroke. The electorate is named after Mount Rumney in outer Hobart. The division covers an area of 434 km2 and includes a number of outer Hobart localities including; Lauderdale, Rokeby, Cambridge, Midway Point and Richmond. Electoral Division Of Montgomery
The electoral division of Montgomery is one of the fifteen electorates in the Tasmanian Legislative Council. It is centred on the Central Coast area and includes the localities of; Ulverstone, Penguin, Heybridge, Hampshire and West Pine. The electorate also includes most of the City of Burnie. Acton, Hillcrest, Montello, Brooklyn, Romaine, South Burnie and Upper Burnie are part of this electoral division. However Somerset, Parklands, Park grove and Shorewell are located in the Electoral division of Murchison. The division shares its western borders with the Burnie Municipal Council. , Montgomery had 27,913 enrolled voters and covers an area of 2,457 km². Leonie Anne Hiscutt (born 14 January 1959) is an Australian politician, who has been a member of the Tasmanian Legislative Council for the division of Montgomery since 2013. Electoral Division Of Huon
The Electoral division of Huon is one of the 15 electoral divisions in the Tasmanian Legislative Council. It was created in 1999, however similar electorates of this name have existed since 1900, and members of the Tasmanian upper house for this region appear to have been elected since 1856. The total area of the division is since a redistribution in August 2017. As of 31 January 2019, there were 25,335 enrolled voters in the division. The current sitting member of the division is Dean Harris, elected in the 2022 by-election. The next periodic election in the division is due in May 2026. Paul Harriss
Andrew Paul Harriss (11 August 1954 – 1 October 2022) was an Australian politician. He was a Liberal Party member of the Tasmanian House of Assembly from March 2014 to February 2016, representing the electorate of Franklin. Harriss was an independent member of the Tasmanian Legislative Council from 1996 to 2014, amassing a lengthy conservative voting record. He resigned from the Legislative Council in 2014, a short time before the conclusion of his Legislative Council term, in order to contest the House of Assembly election as a Liberal. He had previously lost a race as a Liberal candidate at the 1996 Tasmanian election. After the Liberals won the 2014 election, he was appointed Minister for Resources.
