This is a list of members of the 11th Legislative Assembly of Queensland from 1893 to 1896, as elected at the 1893 colonial election held between 18 April 1893 and 25 May 1893 (due to problems of distance and communications, it was not possible to hold the elections on a single day). Legislative Assembly Of Queensland
The Legislative Assembly of Queensland is the sole chamber of the unicameral Parliament of Queensland established under the Constitution of Queensland. Elections are held every four years and are done by full preferential voting. The Assembly has 93 members, who have used the letters MP after their names since 2000 (previously they were styled MLAs). There is approximately the same population in each electorate; however, that has not always been the case (in particular, a malapportionment system - not, strictly speaking, a gerrymander - dubbed the ''Bjelkemander'' was in effect during the 1970s and 1980s). The Assembly first sat in May 1860 and produced Australia's first Hansard in April 1864. Electoral District Of Moreton
The electoral district of Moreton was a Legislative Assembly electorate in the state of Queensland. It was first created in a redistribution ahead of the 1878 colonial election, and existed until the 1912 state election. Moreton replaced the former district of East Moreton, James Francis Garrick being the last member for East Moreton. Moreton was abolished in 1912, replaced by the Electoral district of Murrumba. Electoral District Of Burnett
Burnett is an electoral division of the Legislative Assembly of Queensland in central Queensland, Australia. It covers most of the coastal region south of Gladstone, as well as coastal and inland regions completely surrounding the district of Bundaberg. Towns within its boundaries include Miriam Vale, Agnes Water, Rosedale, Bargara, Woodgate and Childers. The Burnett River flows through the electoral district, hence its name. James John Cadell, was a politician in Queensland, Australia. He was a Member of the Queensland Legislative Assembly for the electoral district of Burnett from 11 July 1891 - 28 March 1896. Early life ''James John Cadell'' was born 5 November 1843 in the Hunter River region, New South Wales, Australia. He was educated at Windsor, New South Wales by Judge Carey. Electoral District Of Cairns
Cairns is an electoral district in the Legislative Assembly of Queensland in the state of Queensland, Australia. The division encompasses the central business district and inner-suburbs of Cairns, in Far North Queensland. Major locations include Bungalow, Manoora, Kanimbla, Earlville and Woree. History Created in 1888, Cairns has historically tended to be a safe Labor seat with a blue-collar economy based on sugar, mining and railways. However, in recent decades such industry has been surpassed in importance by tourism and service industries for wealthier retirees and has grown increasingly marginal. This trend culminated in 2012, when Gavin King took the seat for the LNP on a massive swing of over 13 percent, becoming the first conservative to hold the seat since 1904. George Burns (Queensland Politician)
George Robertson Burns (1847 - 5 November 1893) was a member of the Queensland Legislative Assembly. Biography Burns was born in Edinburgh, Scotland, the son of Graham Burns and his wife Jessie (née McGregor) and was educated in Edinburgh public schools and the Ayr Academy. By 1862 he was apprenticed as an engineer in Glasgow before travelling to Peru and working as an engineer for Randolph, Elder & Company and McOnie's machinery. He then travelled to the United States of America before arriving in Queensland in 1875 and employed as an engineer at Hambledon's plantation in Cairns. He then leased the Townsville Foundry and in 1888 purchased the new Ross Creek Works of the Townsville Foundry and Shipping Company. Electoral District Of Croydon (Queensland)
Croydon was an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly in the Australian state of Queensland from 1893 to 1912. Based in the remote western part of the state, it was first created for the 1893 colonial election out of the district of Burke when that ceased to be a two-member electorate. The district was abolished for the 1912 state election and divided between the districts of Burke and Flinders. The Australian Labor Party (Queensland Branch), commonly known as Queensland Labor or as just Labor inside Queensland, is the state branch of the Australian Labor Party in the state of Queensland. It has functioned in the state since the 1880s. History Trade unionists in Queensland had begun attempting to secure parliamentary representation as early as the mid-1880s. William McNaughton Galloway, the president of the Seamen's Union, mounted an unsuccessful campaign as an independent in an 1886 by-election. A Workers' Political Reform Association was founded to nominate candidates for the 1888 election, at which the Brisbane Trades and Labor Council endorsed six candidates. Thomas Glassey won the seat of Bundamba at that election, becoming the first self-identified "labor" MP in Queensland.
