New South Wales Legislative Assembly
The New South Wales Legislative Assembly is the lower of the two houses of the Parliament of New South Wales, an Australian state. The upper house is the New South Wales Legislative Council. Both the Assembly and Council sit at Parliament House in the state capital, Sydney. The Assembly is presided over by the Speaker of the Legislative Assembly. The Assembly has 93 members, elected by single-member constituency, which are commonly known as seats. Voting is by the optional preferential system. Members of the Legislative Assembly have the post-nominals MP after their names. From the creation of the assembly up to about 1990, the post-nominals "MLA" (Member of the Legislative Assembly) were used. Douglas Cross
Douglas Donald Cross (8 September 1892 – 9 July 1970) was an Australian politician. He was a member of the New South Wales Legislative Assembly from 1948 until 1953 and from 1956 until his death . He was a member of the Liberal Party. Biography Cross was born in Marrickville, New South Wales. He was the son of a police constable and educated to elementary level at a state superior school. Cross initially worked as a carpenter but eventually owned a large building company. He served in the First Australian Imperial Force in France between 1916 and 1919. Cross was an alderman on the council of the Municipality of Kogarah between 1942 and 1970 and was mayor in 1944–47 and 1953–58. In 1948, he was elected to the New South Wales Parliament as the Liberal member for Kogarah at the by-election caused by the death of Labor's sitting member William Currey. John Crook (politician)
John William Crook (14 November 1895 – 4 July 1970) was an Australian politician. He was a member of the New South Wales Legislative Assembly from 1949 to 1959. He was a member of the Labor Party (ALP). Neilly was born in Korumburra. He was the son of a miner and was educated to elementary level at Kurri Kurri Public School. At age 13 he became a coal miner and worked mainly at Richmond Main Colliery. He was an office-holder in the Miners' Federation and was general secretary of the Northern Lodge of the union from 1934 to 1949. He won ALP pre-selection for the seat of Cessnock at a 1949 by-election caused by the resignation of Jack Baddeley to accept a position with the New South Wales State Coal Authority. He won the by-election and subsequent elections in 1950, 1953 and 1956. Jack Baddeley
John Marcus Baddeley (20 November 1881 – 1 July 1953) was an Australian politician and member of the New South Wales Legislative Assembly from 25 March 1922 to 8 September 1949. Early life Baddeley was born in Burslem, Staffordshire, England and migrated to Australia with his family at the age of two. He was educated at Merewether public school, but left at eleven to do odd jobs in the Glebe colliery near Merewether and then worked as a coal miner. in 1902 he married Harriet Churchill and they went on to have two sons and three daughters. He moved to Cessnock in 1908 to work at Neath Colliery and later at Aberdare Extended Colliery. He became a cricketer, first-grade footballer and militant socialist trade union leader. He was a councillor of Cessnock Shire from January until October 1914 and was the first president of the Australian Coal and Shale Employees' Federation from 1915 until 1922. Kevin Dwyer (politician)
Kevin Edward Dwyer (19 July 1913 – 22 August 1982) was an Australian politician and a Labor member of the New South Wales Legislative Assembly for 7 months in 1949–50. Early life Dwyer was born in Goondiwindi, Queensland and was the son of a timberworker. He was educated at Christian Brothers' High School, Lewisham and in an example of nominative determinism became a dyer. Dwyer was elected as an alderman of Alexandria Municipal Council in 1947 and was its last mayor, prior to its integration into the City of Sydney in 1948. He continued as an alderman of the city of Sydney between 1948 and 1959 and was the Deputy Lord Mayor in 1958. Following his retirement from parliament he started a second hand timber yard and was a clerk with the Sydney County Council, the electricity supply authority for Sydney. George Noble (politician)
George Walter Harry Noble (3 February 1891 – 9 July 1949) was an Australian plumber, gasfitter, politician and member of the New South Wales Legislative Assembly for 1 term from 1947 to 1949. He was a member of the Labor Party. Early life Noble was born in Darlington, New South Wales and educated to elementary level. He was an early and notable player of Rugby league after the sport was established in Sydney in 1908. Noble was apprenticed as a plumber and gas-fitter with the New South Wales Government Railways and employed as a gas-fitter from 1913 until he was dismissed during the Australian General Strike of 1917. He was subsequently re-employed with decreased seniority. Noble was elected as an alderman of Alexandria Municipal Council between 1928 and 1932. Brice Mutton
Brice Mutton (8 January 1890 – 7 December 1949) was an Australian politician and a member of the New South Wales Legislative Assembly for nine months in 1949. He was a member of the Liberal Party. Early life Mutton was born in Lerryn, Cornwall and was the son of a carpenter. He was educated to elementary level in Cornwall and became a builder. He emigrated to Australia in 1913 and was employed at Cockatoo Docks as shipwright and later established his own building business. He moved to Concord, New South Wales in 1923 and became active in community organizations including the Parents and Citizens Association and the Police Boys Club. Mutton was elected as an alderman of Concord Council between 1942 and 1949 and was the mayor from 1942 to 1944 and in 1947. William Joseph Carlton (2 May 1894 – 30 January 1949) was an Australian politician and a member of the New South Wales Legislative Assembly between 1935 and his death. He was a member of the Australian Labor Party (NSW) and Labor Party. Early life Carlton was born in Newcastle, New South Wales and was the son of a waterside worker. He was educated to elementary level and was employed by the New South Wales Government Railways as a boilermaker's assistant. He became an organizer for the Australian Railways Union. During World War One, Carlton served as a private in a machine-gun company of the First Australian Imperial Force. Carlton was elected as an alderman of Glebe Municipal Council between 1929 and 1935.
