Kevin Dwyer (politician)
Kevin Edward Dwyer (19 July 1913 – 22 August 1982) was an Australian politician and a Labor member of the New South Wales Legislative Assembly for 7 months in 1949–50. Early life Dwyer was born in Goondiwindi, Queensland and was the son of a timberworker. He was educated at Christian Brothers' High School, Lewisham and in an example of nominative determinism became a dyer. Dwyer was elected as an alderman of Alexandria Municipal Council in 1947 and was its last mayor, prior to its integration into the City of Sydney in 1948. He continued as an alderman of the city of Sydney between 1948 and 1959 and was the Deputy Lord Mayor in 1958. Following his retirement from parliament he started a second hand timber yard and was a clerk with the Sydney County Council, the electricity supply authority for Sydney. Municipality Of Alexandria
The Municipality of Alexandria was a local government area of Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. Originally part of the municipalities of Redfern from 1859 and Waterloo from 1860, the Borough of Alexandria was proclaimed on 27 August 1868. With an area of 4.2 square kilometres, it included the modern suburbs of Alexandria, Beaconsfield and parts of Eveleigh, St Peters and Erskineville. After a minor boundary change with the Municipality of Erskineville in 1908, the council was amalgamated with the City of Sydney, along with most of its neighbours, with the passing of the '' Local Government (Areas) Act 1948'', although the former council area was later transferred in 1968–1982 and 1989–2004 to the South Sydney councils. Rex Connor
Reginald Francis Xavier "Rex" Connor (26 January 190722 August 1977) was an Australian politician who served as a member of the House of Representatives from 1963 to his death, representing the Labor Party. He was the Minister for Minerals and Energy in the Whitlam Government from 1972 to 1975. Connor was born in Wollongong, New South Wales. He served on the Wollongong City Council from 1938 to 1945, and then in the New South Wales Legislative Assembly from 1950 to 1963. After entering federal politics, Connor became an ally of Gough Whitlam, who appointed him to cabinet when Labor won the 1972 election. As Minister for Minerals and Energy, he was noted for his strident economic nationalism. Fred Green (Australian Politician)
Frederick Green (12 November 1900 – 15 September 1983) was an Australian politician and a member of the New South Wales Legislative Assembly from 1950 until 1968. He was a member of the Labor Party (ALP). Green was born in Sydney and educated to elementary level at state schools. He was the son of a metal dealer and worked variously as a brick carter, concrete labourer and law clerk. He joined the Labor party in 1927 and was an alderman on the Alexandria Municipal Council between 1934 and 1948. He was the mayor in 1937, 1938 and 1945. Green was elected to the New South Wales Parliament as the Labor member for the seat of Redfern at the 1950 state election after the sitting Labor member Kevin Dwyer lost party pre-selection and retired. He retained the seat for the Labor Party at the next 5 elections and retired at the 1968 election when the seat was abolished. Green was the Labor Party whip between 1953 and 1959. 1950 New South Wales State Election
The 1950 New South Wales state election was held on 17 June 1950. It was conducted in single member constituencies with compulsory preferential voting and was held on boundaries created at a 1949 redistribution. The election was for all of the 94 seats in the Legislative Assembly, which was an increase of 4 seats since the previous election. At the time of the election, Labor had been in power for 9 years, Jim McGirr had been the Premier for 3 years and Labor had lost power federally to the Liberal Party of Robert Menzies 6 months earlier. The NSW Labor Government, under McGirr, was beginning to show signs of age. The Communist Party of Australia (CPA), known as the Australian Communist Party (ACP) from 1944 to 1951, was an Australian political party founded in 1920. The party existed until roughly 1991, with its membership and influence having been in a steady decline since its peak in 1945. Like most communist parties in the west, the party was heavily involved in the labour movement and the trade unions. Its membership, popularity and influence grew significantly during most of the interwar period before reaching its climax in 1945, where the party achieved a membership of slightly above 22,000 members. George Noble (politician)
George Walter Harry Noble (3 February 1891 – 9 July 1949) was an Australian plumber, gasfitter, politician and member of the New South Wales Legislative Assembly for 1 term from 1947 to 1949. He was a member of the Labor Party. Early life Noble was born in Darlington, New South Wales and educated to elementary level. He was an early and notable player of Rugby league after the sport was established in Sydney in 1908. Noble was apprenticed as a plumber and gas-fitter with the New South Wales Government Railways and employed as a gas-fitter from 1913 until he was dismissed during the Australian General Strike of 1917. He was subsequently re-employed with decreased seniority. Noble was elected as an alderman of Alexandria Municipal Council between 1928 and 1932.
