This is a list of members of the Western Australian Legislative Assembly between the 1917 election and the 1921 election, together known as the 10th Parliament. Notes : The Labor member for Subiaco, Bartholomew James Stubbs, died in action in Belgium on 26 September 1917. At the resulting by-election on 10 November 1917, the Nationalist candidate, Samuel Brown, was successful. : The Nationalist member for Claremont, John Stewart, resigned on 30 August 1918. At the resulting by-election on 14 September 1918, the Nationalist candidate, Thomas Duff, was successful. : Sir James Mitchell, member for Northam, was appointed by Premier Hal Colebatch as Minister for Lands and Repatriation on 17 April 1919. Mitchell was therefore required to resign and contest a ministerial by-election, at which he was declared elected upon the close of nominations on 24 April 1919. Western Australian Legislative Assembly
The Western Australian Legislative Assembly, or lower house, is one of the two chambers of the Parliament of Western Australia, an Australian state. The Parliament sits in Parliament House in the Western Australian capital, Perth. The Legislative Assembly today has 59 members, elected for four-year terms from single-member electoral districts. Members are elected using the preferential voting system. As with all other Australian states and territories, voting is compulsory for all Australian citizens over the legal voting age of 18. Role and operation Most legislation in Western Australia is initiated in the Legislative Assembly. The party or coalition that can command a majority in the Legislative Assembly is invited by the Governor to form a government. Philip Collier
Philip Collier (21 April 1873 – 18 October 1948) was an Australian politician who served as the 14th Premier of Western Australia from 1924 to 1930 and from 1933 to 1936. He was leader of the Labor Party from 1917 to 1936, and is Western Australia's longest-serving premier from that party. Collier was born in Victoria and came to Western Australia to work in the mines. He became involved in the union movement on the Eastern Goldfields, and entered parliament at the 1905 state election, winning the seat of Boulder (which he retained for the rest of his life). In 1911, Collier became a minister in the government of John Scaddan. He replaced Scaddan as Labor leader in 1917, in the aftermath of the split over conscription, and became premier when Labor won the 1924 state election. James Gardiner (Australian Politician)
James Gardiner (12 June 1861 – 27 October 1928) was an Australian politician who served in the Legislative Assembly of Western Australia from 1901 to 1904 and from 1914 to 1921. He served as colonial treasurer under two premiers, Walter James and Henry Lefroy. Gardiner was also the inaugural state leader of the Country Party from 1914 to 1915, and briefly served as Speaker of the Legislative Assembly from March to June 1917. Early life Gardiner was born at Papakura, New Zealand (south of Auckland), to Mary (née Craig) and George Gardiner. Moving to South Australia early in 1865, Gardiner was initially educated in Port Augusta then from 1870 in Saddleworth. After he left school at age 11, he worked in the business of wheat-buyers Ernst Siekmann and John Moule (politician), then with the South Australian Carrying Company Limited for three years and other commercial companies in Saddleworth. Electoral District Of Mount Leonora
Mount Leonora was an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly in the Australian state of Western Australia from 1904 to 1930. The district was located in the Goldfields region, and was based in the town of Leonora. It was generally a Labor seat, although sitting member George Foley sided with the conscriptionists in the Labor split during World War I. George Foley
George James Foley (28 November 1872 – 27 October 1945) was an Australian politician from Western Australia. He was the member for the Western Australian seat of Electoral district of Mount Leonora, Mount Leonora from 1911 until 1920, initially for the Australian Labor Party, Labor Party until 1917 when he joined the National Labor Party. He then entered the Federal Australian House of Representatives, House of Representatives as the Nationalist Party of Australia, Nationalist member for the seat of Division of Kalgoorlie, Kalgoorlie, which he held until 1922. Electoral District Of Kimberley
Kimberley is an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly of Western Australia, located in the state's far north and named after the Kimberley region. The electorate has one of the highest Aboriginal enrolments of any seat in the Parliament. The seat has been held by the Labor Party since 1980—inclusive of one term under a Labor Independent (1996–2001), but has become increasingly marginal in recent years. It saw an extremely close and almost unprecedented four-way race at the 2013 state election, with relatively small primary vote margins separating the Labor, Liberal, National and Green candidates in a result that was not known for several days. Michael Durack
Michael Patrick Durack, (22 July 1865 – 3 September 1950) was a Pastoralism, pastoralist and Western Australian pioneer, known as "M.P." or to the family as "Miguel". He was the son of Patrick Durack and Mary Costello, both Irish-Australians. Life and career Durack was educated at St Patrick's College, Goulburn along with his brother, John Wallace. In 1881 he bought in Queensland and established the Archerfield pastoral run. In 1882–83, his family went on an expedition to the Kimberley (Western Australia), Kimberley region of Western Australia. On his 21st birthday, he made the first sale of Kimberley cattle to a Halls Creek, Western Australia, Halls Creek butcher for £1,200 in raw gold. Electoral District Of Claremont
Claremont was an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly in the Australian state of Western Australia from 1901 to 1968. Located in the affluent western suburbs of Perth, it was a safe seat for the Liberal Party and its predecessor parties. At its abolition it included Claremont, Mount Claremont, Swanbourne and the western part of Dalkeith. It was abolished at the 1968 state election, with its area mostly transferring to Nedlands, and smaller parts to Electoral district of Cottesloe and the new district of Floreat. Thomas Duff (politician)
Thomas Duff (7 April 1870 – 6 June 1949) was an Australian businessman and politician who was a Nationalist Party of Australia, Nationalist Party member of the Western Australian Legislative Assembly, Legislative Assembly of Western Australia from 1918 to 1921. Duff was born in Melbourne to Sophia (née Ross) and Robert Duff. He arrived in Western Australia in 1890, initially living in Perth and then moving to Kalgoorlie in 1893 during the Australian gold rushes, gold rush. He floated a gold mine in 1895, and was later employed as a building inspector. Duff purchased a farming property in Merredin, Western Australia, Merredin in 1904. He became the licensee of the Merredin Hotel in 1907, and from 1912 was a part-owner of the ''Merredin Mercury'', a local newspaper. Electoral District Of West Perth
The Electoral district of West Perth was a Legislative Assembly electorate in the state of Western Australia. The district was named for its location immediately to the west of the central business district of Perth. West Perth was created as one of the initial 30 single-member districts, and one of only six in the Perth-Fremantle area, and its first member, elected in 1890, was Timothy Quinlan, a Perth city councillor and publican at the Shamrock Hotel. Quinlan became embroiled in a controversy regarding provision of state aid to private schools, which he and fellow Catholic MLAs Thomas Molloy and Alfred Canning supported. The Catholic Vicar General, Father Anselm Bourke, established the Education Defence League with their assistance. Thomas Draper
Thomas Percy Draper CBE KC (29 December 1864 – 11 July 1946) was an Australian lawyer, politician, and judge. He was a member of the Legislative Assembly of Western Australia from 1907 to 1911 and again from 1917 to 1921, and was attorney-general in the first government of Sir James Mitchell. He later served on the Supreme Court of Western Australia from 1921 to 1939. Early life Draper was born in Warrington, Lancashire, England, to Annie (née Webster) and Thomas Draper, his father being a tanner. He attended Tonbridge School before going on to Clare College, Cambridge, where he graduated in 1886. Electoral District Of Guildford
Guildford was an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly in the Australian state of Western Australia from 1901 to 1962. Known as Guildford-Midland from 1930 onwards, the district was located in the north-eastern suburbs of Perth. History First created for the 1901 state election, the district's first member was Hector Rason, who had already served a term as the member for South Murchison from 1897. Rason was Premier of Western Australia from August 1905 to May 1906. Rason was succeeded by William Johnson of the Labor Party. Johnson's tenure as a parliamentarian was a long one: he was the district's member from 1906 to 1917 and again from 1924 until his death in 1948. Johnson was succeeded at a by-election by Labor candidate John Brady. When the district was abolished, Brady transferred to the new seat of Swan at the 1962 state election.
