The Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences ( nl, Koninklijke Nederlandse Akademie van Wetenschappen, abbreviated: KNAW) is an organization dedicated to the advancement of science and literature in the Netherlands. The academy is housed in the Trippenhuis in Amsterdam. In addition to various advisory and administrative functions it operates a number of research institutes and awards many prizes, including the Lorentz Medal in theoretical physics, the Dr Hendrik Muller Prize for Behavioural and Social Science and the Heineken Prizes. Main functions The academy advises the Dutch government on scientific matters. While its advice often pertains to genuine scientific concerns, it also counsels the government on such topics as policy on careers for researchers or the Netherlands' contribution to major international projects. Marjo Van Der Knaap
Marjo S. van der Knaap (born 9 May 1958) is a Dutch professor of pediatric neurology at VU University Amsterdam and the VU University Medical Center. She was a winner of the 2008 Spinoza Prize. Her research focuses on white matter disorders. Early life and education Van der Knaap was born on 9 May 1958 in Delft. In 1984 she obtained a cum laude degree in medicine from Erasmus University Rotterdam. She continued her PhD studies and graduated cum laude in 1991 from Utrecht University's department of pediatric neurology, while also collaborating with the department of neuroradialogy of VU University Amsterdam. Career and research In 1999, she became professor of pediatric neurology at VU University Amsterdam. Van der Knaap's research focuses on white matter disorders. In the 1980s she started working with Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), of which she stated it is pivotal for her work. Martin Karplus
Martin Karplus (born March 15, 1930) is an Austrian and American theoretical chemist. He is the Director of the Biophysical Chemistry Laboratory, a joint laboratory between the French National Center for Scientific Research and the University of Strasbourg, France. He is also the Theodore William Richards Professor of Chemistry, emeritus at Harvard University. Karplus received the 2013 Nobel Prize in Chemistry, together with Michael Levitt and Arieh Warshel, for "the development of multiscale models for complex chemical systems". Arno Kuijlaars
Arnoldus Bernardus Jacobus Kuijlaars (born 1963) is a Dutch mathematician, specializing in approximation theory. Kuijlaars completed his undergraduate studies at the Eindhoven University of Technology and received in 1991 his Ph.D. from Utrecht University with thesis ''Approximation of Metric Spaces with Applications in Potential Theory''. Currently he is a professor at the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven. In 1998 Kuijlaars won the triennially awarded Popov prize. In 2010 he was an invited speaker at the International Congress of Mathematicians at Hyderabad. In 2011 he was elected a corresponding member of the KNAW.
