The Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences ( nl, Koninklijke Nederlandse Akademie van Wetenschappen, abbreviated: KNAW) is an organization dedicated to the advancement of science and literature in the Netherlands. In addition to various advisory and administrative functions it operates a number of research institutes and awards many prizes, including the Lorentz Medal in theoretical physics, the Dr Hendrik Muller Prize for Behavioural and Social Science and the Heineken Prizes. Marjo Van Der Knaap
Marjo S. van der Knaap (born 9 May 1958) is a Dutch professor of pediatric neurology at VU University Amsterdam and the VU University Medical Center. She was a winner of the 2008 Spinoza Prize. Her research focuses on white matter disorders. Early life and education Van der Knaap was born on 9 May 1958 in Delft. In 1984 she obtained a cum laude degree in medicine from Erasmus University Rotterdam. She continued her PhD studies and graduated cum laude in 1991 from Utrecht University's department of pediatric neurology, while also collaborating with the department of neuroradialogy of VU University Amsterdam. Martin Karplus
Martin Karplus (born March 15, 1930) is an Austrian and American theoretical chemist. He is the Director of the Biophysical Chemistry Laboratory, a joint laboratory between the French National Center for Scientific Research and the University of Strasbourg, France. He is also the Theodore William Richards Professor of Chemistry, emeritus at Harvard University. Karplus received the 2013 Nobel Prize in Chemistry, together with Michael Levitt and Arieh Warshel, for "the development of multiscale models for complex chemical systems". Arnoldus Bernardus Jacobus Kuijlaars (born 1963) is a Dutch mathematician, specializing in approximation theory. Kuijlaars completed his undergraduate studies at the Eindhoven University of Technology and received in 1991 his Ph.D. from Utrecht University with thesis ''Approximation of Metric Spaces with Applications in Potential Theory''. Currently he is a professor at the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven. In 1998 Kuijlaars won the triennially awarded Popov prize. Sol Kimel
Salo "Sol" Kimel ( he, סול קימל; 7 October 1928 – 14 August 2021) was an Israeli chemical physicist. He was a professor at Technion – Israel Institute of Technology and performed research into biomedical applications of lasers. Biography Kimel was born on 7 October 1928 in Berlin, Brandenburg, Prussia, Germany. During his childhood in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, he was friends with Anne Frank. In 1942, his mother was taken in a Nazi razzia. Kimel subsequently went into hiding on a farm. In early 1945 the farm was raided by Nazi authorities and Kimel was sent to Westerbork transit camp where he remained until the liberation of the camp on 12 April 1945. In 1960 he obtained his PhD in physics from the University of Amsterdam under professor Jan Ketelaar with a thesis titled: "Optical dispersion of gases in the infrared region : the dispersion through the first overtone band of HCI". Harry Kesten
Harry Kesten (November 19, 1931 – March 29, 2019) was an American mathematician best known for his work in probability, most notably on random walks on groups and graphs, random matrices, branching processes, and percolation theory. Biography Kesten grew up in the Netherlands, where he moved with his parents in 1933 to escape the Nazis. He received his PhD in 1958 at Cornell University under supervision of Mark Kac. He was an instructor at Princeton University and the Hebrew University before returning to Cornell in 1961. Kesten died on March 29, 2019, in Ithaca at the age of 87. Petrus Josephus "Peter" van Kessel (born 25 December 1933) is a Dutch historian. He spent his career at the Royal Netherlands Institute in Rome, ultimately becoming vice director. Van Kessel was born in Batavia, Dutch East Indies. He obtained a degree from the Radboud University Nijmegen in 1961. Van Kessel became an intern at the Royal Netherlands Institute in Rome in 1962. He obtained his PhD in 1963 with a thesis titled: "''Duitse studenten in Padua rond 1600 en de controverse Rome-Venetië''". Shortly afterwards he was appointed as secretary of the institute.
