Mella, Cuba
Mella is a town and municipality in the Santiago de Cuba Province of Cuba. It is located north of Palma Soriano and was named after the Cuban revolutionary and communist Julio Antonio Mella. In addition to Mella itself, the municipality includes the population centers of Mangos de Baraguá, Palmarito de Cauto, Regina, and other minor villages. Administratively, Cuba is divided into 15 provinces and one special municipality (the Isla de la Juventud). The last modification was approved in August 2010 (by the Cuban National Assembly), splitting Havana province into two new provinces: Artemisa (which incorporates the three eastern municipalities of the neighbour Pinar del Río) and Mayabeque. Santiago De Cuba Province
Santiago de Cuba Province is the second most populated province in the island of Cuba. The largest city Santiago de Cuba is the main administrative center. Other large cities include Palma Soriano, Contramaestre, San Luis and Songo-la Maya. History Santiago de Cuba province has been the site of many battles, both during the war for independence and the 1959 Cuban Revolution, where much of the guerrilla fighting took place in the mountainous province. Palma Soriano
Palma Soriano is a Cuban city and municipality in the Santiago de Cuba Province. With a population of 125,385 in the city proper, it is the second-largest in the province and the 16th-largest in Cuba. History The city was founded in 1825, uniting ranches (''haciendas'') that stood in this area, and was the place where the body of José Martí (the leader of the Cuban independence movement, killed in 1895, in the Battle of Dos Ríos) was brought before it was laid in its final resting place in Santiago de Cuba. Julio Antonio Mella
Julio Antonio Mella McPartland (25 March 1903 – 10 January 1929) was a Cuban political activist and one of the founders of the original Popular Socialist Party (Cuba), Communist Party of Cuba. Mella studied law at the University of Havana but was expelled in 1925. He was working against the government of Gerardo Machado, which had grown increasingly repressive. Mella left the country, reaching Central America. He traveled north to Mexico City, where he worked with other exiled dissidents and communist sympathizers against the Machado government. He was assassinated in 1929, but historians still disagree on which parties were responsible for his death. The 21st century Cuban government regards Mella as a communist hero and martyr. Cueto is a municipality and town in the Holguín Province of Cuba. Geography The municipality is located southwest of its province, next to the border with Santiago de Cuba Province. It borders with the municipalities of Báguanos, Mayarí, Mella and Urbano Noris (San Germán). In addition to Cueto itself, the municipal territory includes the villages of Alto Cedro, Barajagua, Birán, Marcané, and other minor localities. Holguín () is one of the provinces of Cuba, the third most populous after Havana and Santiago de Cuba. It lies in the southeast of the country.
