Melina Merkouri Indoor Hall, or Rethymno Municipal Indoor Hall, is an indoor arena, indoor sporting arena that is located in the city of Rethymno, on the Greek island of Crete. The seating capacity of the arena for basketball games is 1,600 people. The arena is owned by the municipality of Rethymno. The arena is named after the famous Greek actress and politician, Melina Mercouri. History The hall was opened in the year 1992. The arena has been used as the home arena of the Greek professional sports, professional basketball team Rethymno Cretan Kings B.C., Rethymno Cretan Kings, of the Greek Basket League. In recent years, the arena's seating capacity was increased from 1,100 to 1,600. Rethymno
Rethymno ( el, Ρέθυμνο, , also ''Rethimno'', ''Rethymnon'', ''Réthymnon'', and ''Rhíthymnos'') is a city in Greece on the island of Crete. The 2007 FIBA Europe Under-16 Championship was the 21st edition of the FIBA Europe Under-16 Championship. The cities of Ierapetra, Rethymno and Heraklion, in Greece, hosted the tournament. Serbia won the trophy for the first time since the dissolution of Serbia and Montenegro. Slovenia and Portugal were relegated to Division B. The system has a hierarchical format with a promotion and relegation system between competitions at different levels. There are several different competitions in the system. The Greek Basket League (GBL), often also referred to as the Greek A1 Basketball League, or Greek Basketball Championship (originally called Panhellenic Basketball Championship), and also known as the Stoiximan Basket League for sponsorship reasons, is the first tier level professional basketball league in Greece. It is run by HEBA ( el, ΕΣΑΚΕ, link=no), under the legal authority of the Hellenic Basketball Federation (E.O.K.). It is the highest-tier level of the Greek league system. The GBL plays under FIBA rules and currently consists of 13 teams, with the lowest-placed team relegated to the A2 Basket League and replaced by the winner of the play-offs of that tier. Melina Mercouri
Maria Amalia "Melina" Mercouri (, 18 October 1920 – 6 March 1994) was a Greek actress, singer, activist, and politician. She came from a political family that was prominent over multiple generations. She received an Academy Award nomination and won a Cannes Film Festival Best Actress Award for her performance in the film ''Never on Sunday'' (1960). Mercouri was also nominated for one Tony Award, three Golden Globes and two BAFTA Awards in her acting career. In 1987 she was awarded a special prize in the first edition of the Europe Theatre Prize. As a politician, she was a member of the PASOK and the Hellenic Parliament.
