Melgaço, Portugal
Melgaço () is a municipality in Viana do Castelo District in Portugal. The population in 2011 was 9,213, in an area of 238.25 km². It is the northernmost municipality in Portugal. The present Mayor is Manoel Batista, elected by the Socialist Party. The municipal holiday is Ascension Day. History Parada do Monte, Gave and the plateau of Castro Laboreiro were locations of many megalithic burial mounds and graves that suggest the presence of human settlement in the mountains of the region. Alongside is the hilltop castle, that stood firm during the Galician-Leonese battles. Over the streams they built bridges in solid masonry, while dozens of fishing villages sprung from the banks of the River Minho, in addition to the Romanesque convents, churches and chapels, some of which are quite Romanesque. Castle Of Castro Laboreiro
The Castle of Castro Laboreiro ( pt, Castelo de Castro Laboreiro) is a Portuguese castle in civil parish of Castro Laboreiro, in the municipality of Melgaço. It is the ruins of a Romanesque castle with a belt of walls around a central keep with a cistern. History In the 9th century, Alfonso III of Asturias, donated the settlement of Castro Laboreiro and the castro to Count Hermenegildo, grandfather of Saint Rudesind, for his defeat of the Visigoth King of Hispania, Witiza. During the reign of the Galician count, the castro was adopted as a castle, but would eventually fall into the possession of the Moors. In 1144, Afonso Henriques reconquered the redoubt, and from 1145 his forces began the task of restoring and expanding the defenses: it was Sancho I of Portugal who finally completed the project in the 12th century. The Fountain of São João ( pt, Fonte de São João) is a fountain located in the civil parish of, municipality of Melgaço, in the northern Portugal. History The fountain dates to 1780, with the payment for the construction funded by Dr. João Pedro de Sá, the ''juiz de fora'' for the town of Melgaço, who lived in the locality of Assadura. He was supported with donations from the nobility of the town of Melgaço. In 1903, the fountain was transferred to the ''Praça da República'' in the municipality. At the beginning of the 20th century, the ''Praça da Repúblic'' was already punctuated with trees; the fountain was located in the area opposite the castle and old Conde de Ferreira Primary School. Jean-Loup Passek (29 July 1936 – 4 December 2016) was a French film critic. He was the director of cinematic collections at the Centre Georges Pompidou, and the author of several books about cinema. Early life Jean-Loup Passek was born on 29 July 1936 in Boulogne-Billancourt near Paris. He was of Slavic descent. He inherited the merry-go-round in the Jardin du Luxembourg. Passek graduated from the University of Paris, where he earned a bachelor of arts degree in history and geography. Career Passek began his career as a poet.
