Melby, Halsnæs Municipality
Melby is a village located on the Halsnæs peninsula, midway between Frederiksværk and Hundested, Halsnæs Municipality, North Zealand, some 60 km north of Copenhagen, Denmark. It most notable landmarks are its church, its windmill and a former military camp. Melby Station is served by the Hundested Line between Hillerød and Hundested. As of 1 January 2022, the population was 764. The name Melby is also associated with Melbylejren, a former military installation which is now located in Liseleje-Asserbo, as well as Melby Overdrev, an area of protected heatherlands separating Liseleje and Asserbo Plantations to the east of Liseleje. Church The original Romanesque stone church was built in about 1100. The tower and current chancel date from the 16th century. Both are built in red brick and are decorated with white lesenes. Liseleje
Liseleje is a former fishing village and popular tourist resort in Halsnæs Municipality, North Zealand, some 60 kilometres northwest of Copenhagen, Denmark. The original village is surrounded by extensive areas of summerhouses. It has merged with neighbouring Asserbo, forming an urban area with a combined population of 2,507 (1 January 2022). Geography Liseleje is located 7 km north of Frederiksværk, 70 km from Copenhagen, 50 km from Roskilde, 44 km from Helsingør and 27 km from Hillerød. Liseleje Plantage, a wooded area planted in the late 19th century to combat drifting sand, is located to the east of the town. The 1968 Summer Olympics ( es, Juegos Olímpicos de Verano de 1968), officially known as the Games of the XIX Olympiad ( es, Juegos de la XIX Olimpiada) and commonly known as Mexico 1968 ( es, México 1968), were an international multi-sport event held from 12 to 27 October 1968 in Mexico City, Mexico. Smock Mill
The smock mill is a type of windmill that consists of a sloping, horizontally weatherboarded, thatched, or shingled tower, usually with six or eight sides. It is topped with a roof or cap that rotates to bring the sails into the wind. This type of windmill got its name from its resemblance to smocks worn by farmers in an earlier period. Construction Smock mills differ from tower mills, which are usually cylindrical rather than hexagonal or octagonal, and built from brick or stone masonry instead of timber. The majority of smock mills are octagonal in plan, with a lesser number hexagonal in plan, such as Killick's Mill, Meopham. Melby Windmill
Melby Windmill (Danish. Melby Mølle) is a smock mill located at Melby, Halsnæs Municipality, North Zealand, some north west of Copenhagen, Denmark. History The windmill was built in 1878 for Hans Petersen, a sailor born in 1846 at Sjællands Odde. He operated it and a bakery until 1907. It has later been used as a sawmill. It was taken out of service in 1946 after the tailpole had been destroyed in a storm. Description The windmill consists of an octagonal tower clad in shingles and topped by an ogee cap. The cap carries the four Common sails. It is winded by a tailpole. The mill stands on a stone case, which has an underpass for wagons. Today The windmill is owned by Halsnæs Municipality. It has been restored, but not to working order. It is open to visitors. A key can be obtained in one of the neighbouring houses. Leif Thormod Panduro (18 April 1923 – 16 January 1977) was a Danish writer, novelist, short story writer, and dramatist. Life A dentist by profession, he began in his thirties to write stories about people who can't conform to society's rules for one reason or another. ''Rend mig i traditionerne'', (Kick me in the traditions) from 1959 is about an adolescent who finally ends up in an asylum because he thinks society is mad. This novel was made into a film in 1979. ''Fern fra Danmark'' (Mr. Fern from Denmark) is about a man who wakes up in a hospital with amnesia but discovers more and more about a not very pleasant self. Panduro's books and plays grew increasingly pessimistic about the orderly middle-class society and its senseless norms. Panduro's books were and are still popular in Denmark. Lesene
A lesene, also called a pilaster strip, is an architectural term for a narrow, low-relief vertical pillar on a wall. It resembles a pilaster, but does not have a base or capital. It is typical in Lombardic and Rijnlandish architectural building styles. Function Lesenes are used in architecture to vertically divide a façade or other wall surface optically. However, unlike pilasters, lesenes are simpler, having no bases or capitals. Their function is ornamental, not just to decorate the plain surface of a wall but, in the case of corner lesenes (at the edges of a façade), to emphasise the edges of a building.
