Melbourne and Hobson's Bay Railway Company 2-2-2WT (1854) was the first locomotive operated after the inauguration of a public railway line in Australia. It had diameter cylinders and was capable of producing , reaching and hauling . On 12 September 1854, the Melbourne and Hobson's Bay Railway Company inaugurated the first railway line to operate in Australia using steam locomotives. The line extended from a Melbourne Terminal in Flinders Street and the beach at Sandridge (now Port Melbourne). Four locomotives had been ordered from Robert Stephenson and Company in Newcastle upon Tyne in England, but manufacturing delays made it likely that the railway would be without a locomotive when it opened. The company therefore took the bold step of tasking the Melbourne foundry company Robertson, Martin & Smith, which had never produced one, to construct within 10 weeks a 2-2-2 well-tank locomotive to the design of the railway's chief engineer. Robertson, Martin and Smith was an engineering firm in Melbourne in the second half of the nineteenth century. The company manufactured the first steam locomotive to be built in Australia. Robertson, Martin and Smith comprised a partnership of William B. Robertson, an English born engineer; John Martin; and William Smith. The company was operating from at least mid 1853 with an office in “Lambeth-place” on Flinders-lane west in central Melbourne, when they advertised for labourers, through a proclamation in the Government Gazette. In June they tendered for the construction of a steam gondola for the Cremorne Gardens a pleasure ground on the Yarra River in Richmond. Robert Stephenson and Company was a locomotive manufacturing company founded in 1823 in Forth Street, Newcastle upon Tyne in England. It was the first company in the world created specifically to build railway engines. Famous early locomotives were ''Locomotion'' No. 1 and ''Rocket''. By 1899, 3,000 locomotives had been built at the Forth Street site, and a new company was formed, Robert Stephenson and Company Limited, and the Darlington works was opened. Langlands foundry was Melbourne's first foundry and iron shipbuilder (1842–97). It was established in 1842 (only 8 years after the founding of the colony) by two Scottish immigrants, Robert Langlands (son of John Langlands, baker, of Dundee) and Thomas Fulton (ironmaster) (1813–1859) who had formed a partnership before emigrating. the business was known as the 'Langlands Foundry Co'. Boiling down was the term used in Australia for the process of rendering the fat from animal carcasses to produce tallow. It was a common activity on farms and pastoral properties to produce tallow to be made into soap and candles for domestic use. Boiling down was industrialised in the 1840s, providing the rural sector with a valuable export commodity. It was particularly significant as it came during the 1840s economic depression when the pastoral industry was at a standstill and sheep and cattle otherwise had little value in the colonies. Port Melbourne Railway Line
The Port Melbourne railway line is a former railway line in Melbourne, Australia, opened in September 1854, that is now a light rail line. It was instigated by the Melbourne and Hobson's Bay Railway Company to carry passengers arriving in Victoria at Station Pier and to alleviate the high cost of shipping goods using small vessels up the Yarra River to Melbourne.
