Melbourne Inman
Melbourne Inman (15 July 1878 – 11 August 1951) was the World Billiards Champion in 1908, 1909, 1912, 1913, 1914 and 1919. Biography He was born on 15 July 1878 in Twickenham, Middlesex, England, to Robert Withy Inman (1844–1919) and Annie Cross (1852–1938). On 19 May 1905 he married Florence Ambler (1885–1971) and they had a son, Melbourne Sydney Inman (1909–1947) although his first names were transposed when his death was recorded in Chelsea, London, as Sydney Melbourne Inman. He was the Billiards World Champion in 1908–1909, 1912–1914 and 1919. In 1914 he defeated Willie Hoppe. Twickenham
Twickenham is a suburban district in London, England. It is situated on the River Thames southwest of Charing Cross. Historically part of Middlesex, it has formed part of the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames since 1965, and the borough council's administrative headquarters are located in the area. The population, including St Margarets and Whitton, was 62,148 at the 2011 census. World Billiards Championship (English Billiards)
The World Billiards Championship is an international cue sports tournament in the discipline of English billiards, organised by World Billiards, a subsidiary of the World Professional Billiards and Snooker Association (WPBSA). In its various forms, and usually as a single competition, the title is one of the oldest sporting world championships, having been contested (though irregularly) since 1870. From 2012 to 2014 there were separate ''timed'' and ''points'' divisions, with the tournament held in association with the International Billiards and Snooker Federation. In those years, there was no separate IBSF World Billiards Championship. The rules adopted by the Billiards Association in 1899 are essentially the rules still used today. Chelsea, London
Chelsea is an affluent area in west London, England, due south-west of Charing Cross by approximately 2.5 miles. It lies on the north bank of the River Thames and for postal purposes is part of the south-western postal area. Willie Hoppe
William Frederick Hoppe (October 11, 1887 – February 1, 1959) (surname rhymes with "poppy"), was an internationally renowned American professional carom billiards champion, who was posthumously inducted into the Billiard Congress of America Hall of Fame in 1966. Biography Hoppe was born in Cornwall on Hudson, New York on October 11, 1887. He won 51 world titles between 1906 and 1952, in three forms of carom billiards: three-cushion, (four sub-disciplines of) balkline and one-cushion caroms. He died on February 1, 1959 in Miami, Florida. He is buried in Whitemarsh Cemetery in Ambler, Pa. Professional career Hoppe won 51 world titles between 1906 and 1952. He was also known for various long-standing high , including scoring 2,000 contiguous points in straight rail, 622 points in 18.2 balkline, and a run of 25 points in three-cushion. 1927 World Snooker Championship
The 1927 World Snooker Championship was a snooker tournament held at various venues from 29 November 1926 to 12 May 1927. At the time, it was called the Professional Championship of Snooker but it is now recognised as the inaugural edition of the World Snooker Championship. The impetus for the championship came from professional English billiards player Joe Davis and billiard hall manager Bill Camkin, who had both observed the growing popularity of snooker, and proposed the event to the Billiards Association and Control Council. There were ten players who entered the competition, including most of the leading billiards players. The two matches in the preliminary round were held at Thurston's Hall in London, and the semi-finals final took place at Camkin's Hall in Birmingham. Venues for the quarter-finals were determined by the players involved, resulting in one match being held at Thurston's Hall, one at Camkin's Hall, and one each in Nottingham and Liverpool.
