Meigs is a city in Mitchell County, Georgia, Mitchell and Thomas County, Georgia, Thomas counties in the U.S. state of Georgia (U.S. state), Georgia. The population was 1,035 at the 2010 census. The USAT ''Meigs'' (sometimes incorrectly called USS ''Meigs'') was a United States Army transport ship that was built in 1921 and sunk in Darwin Harbour in the first Japanese air raid against the Australia mainland on 19 February 1942. Building The ship's keel was laid 30 July 1920 by the Los Angeles Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Company (later Todd Pacific Shipyards) at San Pedro, California and completed in 1921 for the United States Shipping Board as ''West Lewark''. Meigs's Syndrome
In medicine, Meigs's syndrome, also Meigs syndrome or Demons–Meigs syndrome, is the triad of ascites, pleural effusion, and benign ovarian tumor ( ovarian fibroma, fibrothecoma, Brenner tumour, and occasionally granulosa cell tumour). Meigs syndrome resolves after the resection of the tumor. Because the transdiaphragmatic lymphatic channels are larger in diameter on the right, the pleural effusion is classically on the right side. The causes of the ascites and pleural effusion are poorly understood. Atypical Meigs syndrome, characterized by a benign pelvic mass with right-sided pleural effusion but without ascites, can also occur. As in typical Meigs syndrome, pleural effusion resolves after removal of the pelvic mass. Meigs Mountain Trail
The Meigs Mountain Trail is an American hiking trail in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park of Sevier County, Tennessee. The trail traverses the northern slopes of Meigs Mountain in the northwest section of the park, connecting Jakes Creek in the Elkmont area with Lumber Ridge in the Tremont area. The Meigs Mountain Trail, when joined with the Lumber Ridge Trail and the first of the Jakes Creek Trail, is part of a continuous path connecting the Appalachian Club section of Elkmont with the Great Smoky Mountains Institute at Tremont. In the early 20th century, the logging communities that formed at Elkmont and Tremont branched out across the relatively broad northern slopes of Meigs Mountain. Other than a crude mountain cemetery, the occasional detritus, and a few rock walls, however, very little remains of the mountain's former inhabitants. Meigs School
Meigs School (or currently Meigs Academic Magnet Middle Prep) is a public magnet school located in Nashville, Tennessee. History The school is named in honor of James L. Meigs, Nashville's second superintendent of public schools. In a report by Superintendent Caldwell in 1880-81 he shared that "at least 150 Black students had been refused permission to enter a school because there was no room for them. In 1881, the Nashville Board of Education appropriated funds for two new public schools for Black Students: Pearl and Meigs Schools, both built in the same two-story brick plan". From 1891–1892, Kizziah J. Bills a Black suffragist, worked at Meigs School. Meigs School could accommodate 600 students when it opened as a grammar school in the fall of 1883 on Georgia Street. Meigs High School
Meigs High School is a public high school in Pomeroy, Ohio, United States. It is one of four high schools in Meigs County. The school mascot is the Marauders. Meigs High School is the creation of several school districts within Meigs County including Middleport, Pomeroy, Bedford, Northwestern, and Salem. Consolidation took place between the years 1965 and 1967 with construction of the new school beginning in the summer of 1968. The current school opened in 1970, and is still in use today. Athletics The Marauders belong to the Ohio High School Athletic Association (OHSAA) and the Tri-Valley Conference, a 16-member athletic conference located in southeastern Ohio. Meigs-Bishop House
The Meigs–Bishop House is a historic house at 45 Wall Street in Madison, Connecticut. With a construction history dating to about 1690, it is one of the town's oldest surviving buildings. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1988. It is now used for commercial purposes. Description and history The Meigs-Bishop House is located in Madison's central business district, on the west side of Wall Street at Brookside Road. It is a -story wood-frame structure, with a gabled roof, large central chimney, and clapboard exterior. Its main facade is five bays wide, with a slightly asymmetrical placement of sash windows around a nearly centered entrance. Fort Meigs
Fort Meigs was a United States fortification along the Maumee River in what is now Perrysburg, Ohio during the War of 1812. The British Army, supported by Tecumseh's Confederacy, failed to capture the fort during the siege of Fort Meigs. It is named in honor of Ohio governor Return J. Meigs Jr., for his support in providing General William Henry Harrison with militia and supplies for the line of forts along the Old Northwest frontier. History Construction of the fort started in February 1813 by soldiers under the command of General William Henry Harrison (future president) at a site where present-day Perrysburg, Ohio developed. It was to provide a supply depot and staging point for US military operations in Canada that would also command the rapids of the Maumee River.
