Arthur Ingersoll Meigs
Arthur Ingersoll Meigs (1882–1956) was an American architect. He and his colleagues at Mellor, Meigs, and Howe were involved in the design and construction oversight of bank buildings, the students' hall at Bryn Mawr College, multiple personal residences of prominent individuals, and the United States Coast Guard's World War Memorial at Arlington National Cemetery, as well as a chapel at the Somme American Cemetery near Bony, France and a monument to the United States Army's Twenty-Seventh and Thirtieth Divisions between Ypres and Mount Kemmel, the latter two of which were commissioned by the American Battle Monuments Commission. The accomplishments of his firm were recognized with the Gold Medal of the Architectural League of New York and the Medal of the American Institute of Architects' Philadelphia chapter. Sandra Meigs
Sandra Meigs (born 1953) is a Canadian visual artist. She is based in British Columbia, Canada. Her paintings have been exhibited in Canada and internationally and she is a member of the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts. Biography Sandra Meigs was born in Baltimore, Maryland in 1953. She was a ceramics major at the Rhode Island School of Design from 1971 to 1973 and obtained her Bachelor of Fine Arts at the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design, in Halifax in 1975. She completed her Master of Arts in Philosophy at Dalhousie University in 1980. She began her career as a painter in Toronto, and in 1993 moved to Victoria, British Columbia where she was a Professor in Visual Arts at the University of Victoria for 24 years. She retired in July 2017 after 24 years with their Visual Arts Department. She taught painting 101, as well as theory to all levels of students, both graduate and undergraduate. Peveril Meigs III (May 5, 1903 – September 16, 1979) was an American geographer, notable for his studies of arid lands on several continents and in particular for his work on the native peoples and early missions of northern Baja California, Mexico. Meigs was born in Flushing in New York City. He studied at the University of California, Berkeley, receiving his B.A. degree in 1925 and a Ph.D. in 1932. Mary Meigs (April 27, 1917 – November 15, 2002) was an American-born painter and writer. Early life Meigs was born in Philadelphia, the daughter of Edward Browning Meigs and Margaret Wister Meigs, and grew up in Washington, D.C. Her great-great-grandfather was the obstetrician Dr. Charles Delucena Meigs, and her great-granduncle was Major General Montgomery C. Meigs, Quartermaster General of the United States Army during the American Civil War. She studied at Bryn Mawr College, graduating in 1939, and subsequently taught English literature and creative writing at that school. Josiah Meigs (August 21, 1757 – September 4, 1822) was an American academic, journalist and government official. He was the first acting president of the University of Georgia (UGA) in Athens, Georgia, Athens, where he implemented the university's first physics curriculum in 1801, and also president of the Columbian Institute for the Promotion of Arts and Sciences. Charles Delucena Meigs
Charles Delucena Meigs (February 19, 1792 – June 22, 1869) was an American obstetrician of the nineteenth century who is remembered for his opposition to obstetrical anesthesia and to advocating the idea that physicians' hands could not transmit disease to their patients. Biography Meigs was born February 19, 1792, in St. George, Bermuda, the son of Josiah Meigs and Clara Benjamin Meigs. He died June 22, 1869, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He graduated in medicine at the University of Pennsylvania in 1817. In 1818 he was awarded an honorary degree of M.D. from Princeton University. Meigs specialized in obstetrics and was for a long time the acknowledged leader in this branch of medicine. In 1826, Meigs was elected as a member of the American Philosophical Society. John Rodgers Meigs (February 9, 1842 – October 3, 1864) was an officer in the Union Army during the American Civil War. He was the son of Brigadier General Montgomery C. Meigs, the Quartermaster General of the United States Army. He participated in the First Battle of Bull Run, and later testified in the court-martial trial of an officer involved in the retreat from the battle. He attended the United States Military Academy, where he was an acting assistant professor of mathematics and graduated first in his class in June 1863. He was lauded by Secretary of War Edwin M.
